I need to run 500 ft of common phone, 1 pair. This is temp. We had some IW but it's 2 pair and some of the big spools are 24ga I think, so puny and fragile. I was tempted to run 18 speaker wire but I bet it needs to be twisted? Stores are out of so much, anyone know what's the most economical? I spose I might have to go to electric supply?

For a POTS line cat whatever is fine. It travels over basically the same conductors a lot more than 500' to get to you on 24 ga

Cat3 meets phone requirements anything better is just 'future proofing' your phone line. I still have a few boxes of dregs of some Cat5 that I use either for phone line or for twist ties on my extension cords.

If it is temp you will likely not need to worry about inside/outside/bury rating as inside rated Cat5 outlived it's self outside for about 19 years before being replaced just becuase I finally got around to making it a more permanent run. My winters are not as harsh as a lot of places but they are wet and cold beyond the rating of the cable I used.

CAT5e is typically 24AWG. CAT6 is 23 or 22 AWG.

The phone wire in a house from the 50s through the 70s, was 4 conductor, 20 (?) AWG solid. Pretty stout stuff !

I have a couple hundred feet of it stashed (was used for a temporary phone installation, outside). It yours if you want it.

Signal was fine. I had a roll of IW I would spool out and rewind with the battery drill and when I managed it things were fine. It got damaged and worked on and I need to go business hours to the wholesale house and get another roll. I was going to look in stock and see if I could fix some up, last year the girl got some of that light 24 multi conductor, even p***y hair isn't that fine, cant splice it or wire it to a couple common jacks.
