Photo-Electric Eye Working?

I put up a lamp post for my wife. Included with the lamp post is photoelectric eye so the light will be a dawn dusk type. When I wire it direct it turns on and off at the flip of a switch. When I wire in the photoelectric eye and cover the eye with my finger it does not come on. Shouldn't it come on when I cover it with my finger? It it likely the photoelectric eye is bad? What is a good way to test it?

How long are you holding your finger over the eye? You may have to cover it for 30 seconds or more. This is to account for passing clouds and shadows.

Okay I probably was not putting my finger over it long enough. I will try the tape suggestion and let you know how it works.

Most photocells that I've worked with.................
When power is first applied they close (turn the light on) for about a minute then operate normally after that minute is up.

So if you turn it off at the switch-When you turn the switch on again the light will come on for a minute even if it is light outside. If it is dark the light will stay on.
