I'd like to get a photo tach to keep in my box at work. I can find plenty of cheap ones that you point at the tape and read. . Those are fine, but I need one with a remote sensor.

What I would like is one that I can set up the remote sensor on a magnetic mount to point at the engine or other component (like a hydraulic fan, driveshaft, or the wheels) and use a wire running to the display unit so I can hold it while I am in the cab of a machine. A wireless sensor would also be cool, but don't know if those exist at a reasonable price.

We have a Caterpillar multitach in the toolroom at work, but the battery is always dead, and whoever else uses it always seems to put it back in a mess. Anyway, it's cumbersome and overcomplicated for what I need to do, I want a simpler unit to keep in my box (and be able to take home as needed).

How bad do you want one? Here's what I use and there are remote sensors available. No idea what it costs but I work at SKF and anything we sell is EXPENSIVE.

I purchased the cat multitach when they first released them to dealers. I never had a problem with batteries in it. The mag base was a bit large, but at the time it didn't matter. I never have seen a competing tach. Sold mine in 2004 still working fine.

I looked it up and it will cost me more than a multitach setup off of ebay. I have to check at work to see if we have any multitachs in the supply chain since they have been superseded apparently by the fancy diagnostic setup.
