All the Sunex impact sockets I have are stamped and laser etched with their size, but the stamped text size is very small.

OLD craftsman stuff IIRC.

A coworker of mine had some and the stamping was so huge and deep you could read it very quickly and easily from far away no matter how filthy they were. Thought it was so cool. Screw this new age laser etching ********. He was in his 50's or 60's so they might be REALLY old.

I have Autocrafts that are stamped/engraved and love me but need to fill the odd sizes they don't make. My shop is 2 blocks from the ocean so anything with laser engraving wears so fast it's not even worth it. I have a set of CP shallow impacts I'd almost give away because I can't see the sizes anymore

I think that when craftsman only lazer etched the sockets it was a way to get out of the lifetime warranty because once the socket wears out the etching its hard to prove its a craftsman tool. This has already happened to an 8mm deep socket of mine.

Uhhhhh...No.

AFAIK and have ever seen for years and near a decade C'man impacts are either stamped only or dual marked meaning both etched and stamped. Never just etched as the gold etching on the impacts in no way could ever hold up over time. Only way that could have occurred is at the same time of the chrome etching launch , which was an epic fail.

The first run of C'man CHROME's that were only etched sockets ( I have a set I bought new back in 2006 or so) was an attempt to cut costs by removing the size, p/n, and logo stamping process during mfg. and only etch them. Etching must have been hella cheap in order to even ponder the process. :)

Little did they know that under heavy use that the etching would indeed wear off. Totally off.

Still to this day Sears will take your etched only sockets in and give you dual marked new pieces in exchange no questions asked.

You can cry "conspiracy" and "warranty foul" all day long but they are claer on what they put out and its flaws.

All of the C'man impacts now made are stamped and have been for years. Even the current Chinese made units.

Ummmm yeah,

Just saying that I have ran into a problem trying to exchange a deep 8mm socket that was from a set that had no stamping and was only etched, but that was the last time I bought tools from Sears..

I have harbor freight and an older (circa 2006) Husky brand sets of impact sockets. All of them are stamped with size and whatnot.

I haven't seen impact sockets that aren't stamped, to be honest with you.

Then that socket must have NO identifiable traces of any etching left on the side if they rejected it.

There is a Corporate issued service bulliten printed on an 8-1/2 x 11 sheet of paper in the black binder at every Sears tools checkout register with the warranty / swap out for etched sockets mandate.

I did a few that were getting close to illedgible last fall.

No muss no fuss swap.

Most tool dept.'s are aware of the issue and have been for years.

But sadly, not all Sears stores are made = as you obviously have found out.
Bummer.

My local Sears doesn't do that. I've taken tools in there with no name. They swapped anyway. I go 35 minutes out of my way to give that store FAR more business because of that. Even when I could get it cheaper elsewhere and have nothing to swap.

harbor freight ones are stamped, but there have been batches that were engraved for some reason.

I bet the engraved ones are from either the factory people mistakenly engraved a batch without charging more or were in too big a hurry from the previous differently branded batch to change the machinery.
