Anybody had experience (good or bad) with side mounted garage door openers like the liftmaster 8500 series vs centerline/ceiling mt?

Considering for 10'w x 8'h insulated doors :dunno:

'66C' You're right. 'There's nothing new under the sun'. Responses are overall positive for the 'sidemount'...

1 1/2 years here with the 8500 and not one issue! Super quiet and love that auto lock.

I've had mine for exactly a year now. Only complaint for me is the very short range for the remote.

I do have led outdoor lighting on the garage which could be the problem, but even with the led lights switched off the range is about 20 feet.

The myQ stuff works excellent though. Whatever band the myQ communicates is unaffected by led interference.

I have a liftmaster 8500 on the newest bay and Chamberlain center mount openers on the three older bays. The 8500 is better by far, but it costs more. Another case of you get what you pay for.

FWIW - I'm on my original two Genie center mount screw drives. House built in 1993. An occasional light bulb in the unit and an occasional 9v battery in the remotes. (1) 18x8 and (1) 9x8 insulated doors. Extremely quiet.
$125 a piece 23 years ago. Not sure how pricey they'd be now.

I've had a liftmaster side mount on my 18' door for at least 5 years. Absolutely no issues with the opener itself. I love it.

I did have the tracks "adjusted" for a little more pitch such that the door closes easier. When there was no "slope" on the upper horizontal run, there were some times when the door wouldn't close as the liftmaster doesn't "pull" the door closed as a center-mount does, it merely releases the tension on the cable enable the door to slide down. This wasn't an issue with the opener itself, and since I adjusted the tracks, there have been 0 problems.

blue - using avg inflation for the past 23 years (about 2.52%/yr) that unit would cost just over $208.00 today. In going over iNet prices it looks like the 8500 is priced in the low $300's. What's the diff? Technology?, better materials? Don't know for sure, but a 67% decrease in buying power and 50% additional premium...Maybe they're paying better wages in Nogales than what we're led to believe...

thank you for your response - mv :)

I have two on my 8X10 insulated metal doors. Quiet, short range, no issues after a couple of months.

R - Thank you for your response. May you have another 22 years and (make that 10) mths of uninterrupted and faithful service from your 8500's (see Blue above)...;)

Six years with the 8500 on a 10x8 insulated door with a cathedral ceiling and door tracks that hug the ceiling. I needed this arrangement to clear the lift. The 8500 cost bit more but has worked well. I do have an occasional issue with the remote ceiling light. It is motion activated and sometimes stays on all night with no motion in the garage. Chamberlain replaced it under warranty and the new one has the same issue. They then sent me a new motherboard for the opener itself. But I have not gotten around to installing that.....

Liftmaster 8500 openers

I have two 8500s. Instaled about a year ago.
Hands down, they are the Best. Openers. Ever.

Quiet and smooth. I especially love the automatic locking feature, and the Internet connectivity.

No personal 8500 experience because....
I do not like the need for a "heavy" door adjustment.
No advantage that justifies the 50% price increase.

I have three 8500s and love them. Quiet, reliable, no problems. I really like the clean look of no track for the opener. Mine are about 2 years old.

I have a Chamberlain lift and it's great quiet and smooth . I got one because of the 4post hoist and it was a great idea I only have 11feet of height space .q

Try this, take about a 16" piece of coax cable, strip an inch back from each end, make a loop and twist the ends together, strip the yellow antenna wire back hanging out of the controller, twist these together, let the loop hang. It will increase the range of the remote.

PS, to the OP, I have had my 8500 in for about 2 years now and it works great.
