My wife dragged me to an estate sale today. I went straight to the garage looking for tools. Mostly cheap dollar store stuff, except this long black box. picked it up and found this set. 1/2 in Craftsman socket/ratchet set in original box. I closed the lid and held onto it. They are dated with a circle H. Today was half off day so we ended up paying $3.00.

I keep raving about stuff & tools I find at estate sales on here. I am happy for you that you went with your wife. My wife doesn't like to drive around the city so I am normally the "taxi driver". Since I am already there I always go in and go through the garage.
Great find and on a 50% off day even better!

I think it's amazing that you should find this gem on half price day. That implies there were other days of full price. So how many would be treasure hunters had to walk past this set and not realise the treasure inside? We are certainly on the path less travelled, aren't we. Sometimes when I show an old tool to somebody I get the distinct feeling they don't get it. Congratulations. I get it. You get the suckage.

That's awesome. It's amazing what a)people pass on at estate sales and b) the gems you can find at unsuspecting estate sales. Good find.

I also picked up a 1949 Revere Eight projector(8mm) for 20.00. They had some extra bulbs mixed in with a bag with film in it.Picked that up also for 3.00. Got home and played the film, it was ww2 footage that someone had made. We went back on sunday (75%off day) and picked up the rest of the film they had. It was all from '41-'42 family vacation footage and a couple Castle News films from ww2.
Oh, the socket set was missing the 7/16th socket. Found that and an older snap-on DBE wrench on sunday. Got those for .25c each.
Looks like someone clear coated the ratchet and sockets.

I wonder if any of the descendants would be interested in that old film...I have a video copy of some from around the same era, it's fascinating to see moving pictures of my aunts and uncles when they were young, as well as older relatives who died before I was born.

Stuart,
The family seamed like they just wanted the money, and the stuff gone. The reason i picked up the projector was that my mom found a bunch of 8mm film that my grandfather took in the 40's and 50's. I know there is footage from a hometown parade in 1957. It was the 150th birthday for our hometown. It would be nice to see it, as this year is the 200th.

I go to estate sales in my area looking for tools. Of the numerous estate sales companies that hold these, I know the ones who know little about or care about tools (sorry ladies, but it's usually the woman-owned companies). I compete with only a few other 'tool hawks' in my area, but fortunately they're also looking for larger antiques and they get easily distracted as they go into the house before looking in the garage. I ALWAYS go in the garage first! That's where I get these sorts of finds.

On the other end of the estate company spectrum in my area is one that has a 'man-stuff' guy who bird-dogs everything men want like tools, fishing tackle, hunting, etc. He researches everything down to the flipping' molecular structure, and marks everything retail + 25% just to be on the safe side. But sometimes he simply doesn't have the time, and he's not such an expert that he can recognize some of the older brands as something he even needs to research. So I catch him sometimes too!

My real challenge is being in central Florida. People really didn't start moving down here in quantity until air conditioning became commonly available to the public in the 1950s, and so it's hard to find earlier stuff. Add to this the humidity + the five months of 90s temperatures, all which accelerate the oxidation process on anything stored long-term in a garage. Most of the time you find rust everywhere. Old cloth, vinyl and plastic just disintegrates. And the bugs and rodents? Everything eats everything down here. But wait....there's more. The water tables are so high down here that no one can have basements (minus one important long-term storage space). We don't have snow, and so the peeks of the roofs are shallow so there's no real stand-up attics (minus #2 storage). Lots of things just get thrown away because there's no place to keep it.

Did I mention all the estate sales of retirees who, when they retired to florida, sold off all their old stuff (including tools that they weren't going to use anymore) before the moved down here?

In short, ALL you guys in the northern climes who are awash in older stuff of all kinds get the **** AWARD. :uzi:
