Picked up a Shop Smith yesterday and I know they have mixed reviews but couldn't turn down a free one. I'm no master woodworker but I can throw some saw dust from time to time haha. It came with a band saw, planer, and belt sander attachments as well as the usual lathe and table saw. It appears to be in excellent shape with zero rust, no damage, and all the knobs and handles are still attached. After I give it a good cleaning and going over I'm gonna fire it up and see how she works so if any of you fellas have one of these and have any pointers fire them away.

Here is a pointer, if you got it for free, you are not going to like it. You should let me take that off your hands, and free up some of your garage space. Im in atl so I'll come to you to get it.

Just kidding.

If you picked that up for free, that a steal. Even ones used and missing parts go for around $600. Ive always loved these shopsmiths. Great tool to have at the house for home wood shop. I will say one thing, your best bet is to make some kind of shelving system for all the "extra" tools. This way you can put them away and not have to worry about them laying all over the place and parts getting lost.

Heckuva suckage!

The ShopSmith is the most versatile homeowner woodworking machine one can have. New, they're also as overpriced as most things sold in shopping malls. Talk about a rude awakening when someone tries to sell the like-new-seldom-used machine for which he/she paid $3500-4500.

Getting one free with all those attachments takes away the only complaint anyone has ever had about them. As long as one isn't expecting to rip full sheets of 3/4" plywood and built cabinets, it's a great machine.

I had one years ago and never cared for it as a table saw or drill press. But as a lathe it worked very well. If I came across a free one I would cut the tubes down and used it at a sanding station. Belt sander on one side and a 12 disk on the other side. With the variable speed it would be perfect.

Nice score btw.

yeah i was excited to get it! It was my wifes grandfather's who passed away a couple years ago and his son didn't want it ( he pays everyone to do stuff for him pffttt..) so I got tired of seeing it sit there wasting away so since he and I got along really well and worked on multiple projects together I grabbed it up when the wife asked if i wanted it haha. I hope to have it up and running this weekend. It came with a shop smith student guide explaining how to use everything so I plan on reading thru it and getting myself familiar

Free is always a good deal :beer:

As Packard said the table saw is not going to rip up anything big, but many a men have built birdhouses and cub scout derby cars on those machines.

I have lost count over these many years of walking into man caves and seeing them stored in the corner of the garage next to the RA saw, so I am guessing at one time they were a big seller.

On those cold winter nights you can have fun working on projects.:rocker:

Enjoy

Great deal and that one looks to be in exceptional condition. Nothing wrong with ShopSmith, you can always selectively upgrade later if you decide to take on larger projects.

There was a time when a new car, a perfect lawn, and a workshop in the garage were the measure of the American middle class man.

I have had a Shopsmith before, and kept it set up as a lathe, because I didn't like swapping out the other tools.
I did see a cool use of a variable speed Shopsmith motor head, where a guy had mounted it to run his band saw. He had a variable speed Delta floor standing band saw when he was done.

I have a Ss also, and love it, passed down from my grandfather when he moved. Before my grandfather had it a cabinet maker used it professionally. I am still hunting around for some of those add on like the jointer and bandsaw, you got lucky with those.

They do need some maintenance, oil frequently inside the motor case and out with 3 in one oil. You can get any info or information from the Ss message board. The parts I have changed are the porkchop, the quill bearings, and a belt. Other than that I just oil and blow out dust from the motor compartment.

There are a load of upgrades so if something doesn't work well enough chances are someone already has found a fix. They will rip wood just make sure the saw blade is sharp and the speed is set right.

You really ****. Amazing score with the attachments.
Never adjust the speed dial without the the quill turning. This can cause the belt to be pinched by the sheaves. And oil regularly.
Shopsmith.net has an astounding amount of knowledge.
Enjoy the machine.

Glad everying thinks so highly of me with all the "you ****" comments HAHA...I've already found the SS message boards and have already made several notes of things I need to do before I fire it up. I'm hoping to start cleaning it up tonight and oiling everything since it hasn't been ran in quiet a while. After I get everything up and going I'll post some pics of her all shined up
