...for $75. Sanborn 80 gal, 5HP, 175psi max. Twin cylinder two stage pump with CFM unknown. It's in rough shape with bad motor, beat up shroud, and some odd damage on the motor mount brackets. Heavy as hell. Pump turns free, seller said they swapped out start capacitor with no luck. What would a new motor set me back?

Motor pic and odd damage on mount. Can't imagine what would break loose the back mounts like that

Sounds like it fell over to me. If there was damage to the shroud and the mounts broken sounds plausible to me. Got any numbers off the motor?

Agreed but if it fell over from an upright position you'd expect it to have damage at the opposite end. And yes there is damage to the shroud cage but on the pump side. Pump pulley turns true. Motor is a MagneTek 5HP 230v single phase 3450 RPM with model number as 8-177399-01. Tank data plate indicates its a very old unit, circa 1989

Is there damage to the motor or just the mount ? If it's just the mount, I'd fix that by straightening it out and/or welding an extra plate to bolt it back down underneath it.

I don't see any damage to the tank at all. As heavy as it is the tank must have substantial wall thickness. Even with the bad motor I figured the tank and pump were worth $75. If the windings in the motor are ok and shaft isn't bent I'd bet the motor is salvageable. The mount brackets are all that appear damaged and I can probably buy a new one or straighten it. Will post up what I find

I'm with you on age but it does give you some idea of how much wear the pump might have. If it's been taken care of should be ok. And thanks, if the windings ohm out ok on the motor I hope to repair it.

Finally got my HVAC guy over to take a look at the compressor. Motor windings checked out ok. (yay!) He replaced the bulged capacitors and she roared to life. The aluminum pump pulley does have some deflection to it. It looked minor when turning the pump thru by hand but running does present some vibration, more than I would have expected. It's so mild I'll try to straighten it but may just buy a new one. With the caps I think I have about $125 in it. Now I need to find the right place to put it. Not sure it will fit under the stairs like my old horizontal unit. :(

Check with Green Valley Compressor they keep pulleys when they scrap a pump so they might have one that fits yours. They are located in Keller on 377.

Just a thought, before you replace the motor, Jumper out the reset switch on the back first.

Nice find! I wouldn't call 1989 "old". I have compressors in use in some of my buildings that are 50+ years old...

Put a Solberg filter/silencer on it. Amazon. Quieter than the oem one.

Interested in this. This larger compressor is noisier than my 3cyl horizontal unit and I'd be interested in lowering the decibel levels.
