Cool. I'd be tempted to pick one up, too. Problem is I'd have to store it... Hmmm, maybe I can convince my neighbor to buy one...

I have taken mine apart and store it in the attic. I've only needed it twice. The first time I couldn't find one to rent when I needed it so I just bought one. I am glad I have it though, I hate having to borrow stuff or trying to rent something only to be told all the rentals are out and haven't been returned yet when I really need something.

I'll argue that, look at the build. The vast majority of this type of thing is built in the same factory with different paint, labels, and sometimes a few very minor design changes.

They're made in the same place.

FYI, watch out for the rings welded onto the hitch pins...if you wack them on something, they fall off, they're welded like ***.

Another example, look at clarke vs. hf sandblasters, along with a few other brands. Same damn thing.

Well, if not, it's the same blueprints. Same push handle, same boom, same hitch pins, same chain setup, same bracing, same wheels, same jack, same jack handle holder.

The torin one can be enlarged, and has multiple clear pictures. The hf picture *****, but it's 20' away from me, so I can go look at it.:spit:

I bought a similar one at Advanced Auto...MUCH better fit and finish..easy to spot. Better hardware, better welds, etc. I bought an HF and ended up taking it back when I couldn't get all the parts to fit right.

They may be made at the same factory (I would have no idea), but they definitely aren't made on the same assembly line.

Even with identical appearing products, it would be hard to tell if one Chinese engine hoist was made in the same factory as another brand.

The Chinese copy the western product-The Chinese copy each other-The original western product manufacturer moves production to China etc...

BTW: I have a Larin brand folding hoist that is like the one in the original post. I have used it to pull a few 4 cyl. engines with no problems. If I was going to be using it at or near capacity, I might consider replacing the bolts with ones of known quality though.

zuspiel, you might look at some that fold up; if you are dealing with the 289 in your mustang, you don't need at really large on to get the job done. My brother has one that folds up pretty well; it is similar to the one in this picture: http://www.menintools.com/hydraulic/miteh200.html
Sounds the like the Northern fold up too; they just don't show a picture, that leveler would be a great help, too! :)

That one is the same hoist, too. Click on the picture in the northern link, it gets you a bigger picture, and there's 6-7 of them. Apparently, there are at least 3 companies sticking their name on them.

Point to watch for lower cars is that some hoists have caster style wheels that raise the front legs (which need to go under the car) several inches, and some have the axle of the wheel through the end of the leg with the leg barely off the ground.

Yes, there are differences, thickness of tubing and placements of top supports, that one looks right, some of those at discount auto parts have failed. For room issues they have folding one, my bud has an orange one that is great, super well built, flawless welding.
I dont use mine as much for engines but general stuff, twice in 2 days, a great hand for fab work, just makes a lot of things easy and very portable. I use it in place of forklift a lot.

I picked up the 1-Ton Folding version from Harbor Freight last weekend. I was eying the bigger one on sale down the street at Northern Tool, but the HF one was on sale for $129, and I had a 20% off coupon... for $103, I couldn't pass it up. It went together really easily with no problems, and I have already used it a few times to move big things around the shop.
