Picked up a nice Nutone wall mounted vacuum in great shape that I want to use for a garage/car vac. Looks like the 30' hose kits are around $60. Any idea on how to make a cheaper hose?

Use pool vacuum hose.
Cheap shop vac hose is ribbed on the inside. The good stuff is smooth on the inside, and ribbed on the outside only.

That is indeed the smooth on the inside sort of hose.

There are three standard sizes of vacuum hoses:

Home vacuum size is nominally 1 1/4". These fit the attachments on your typical canister vacuum.

Industrial vacuum size is nominally 1 7/8". That's also the pool vac hose, and the size I use.

Shop vac size is 2 1/4".

Go to your local vac shop. They should have bulk 1 1/4 hose that's relatively inexpensive (about $1 per foot.) Or ask for a garage kit (Comes with hose, hanger, tools etc) for less than $60.

I've think I've read mixed reviews of using pool hose for a vacuum. Do your research before choosing this option.

I would personally buy the correct hose for a central vac.
