Picked welder now helmet/hood

Ok so I am going to order my Hobart 210mvp. So excited to see how much better it performs that my HF mig. Now I am looking at getting a new helmet so I can actually see what I am welding and where I am going. My super cheap solar HF helmet just does not allow this.

I have drilled it down to two and since I know far less than you all just wanted to bounce my logic off of you all. I want to spend less than $125 since this is for hobby use.

I was looking at the Hobart Impact in black that Cyber has for $104 and comparing that to the Miller Digital Pro Hobby that they have for $131.

To me the Hobart looks like a better buy because it has 3 sensors vs 2 on the miller. Hobart has larger viewing area and is 5,000 faster. They have the same shade settings and finally the Hobart is less expensive.

Am I missing something here that makes the Miller a better helmet or is the Hobart truly just the better and less expensive of the two?

I have the hobart impact. works great and never been flashed. The only problem is when welding outside sometimes the sun will make it go dark ( i assume this happens with all of them). But it has a large viewing area and respends perfectly.

Ayuh,... I donno either of those hoods, but the differences could well be in the Head Harness,...

The greatest fastest hood in the world is Junk, if the head harness *****,...

Best bet is to go try them on, see what shade works best for your eyes and what headgear is the most agreeable to you.

Some of them are green tinted, some orangish red. One or the other might give your eyes better contrast when you're trying to watch the puddle, or you might not care.

Some have "new and amazing!" headgear that isn't quite so amazing IMO. Some are shaped funny, supposedly to protect you better, but you can't look down without burying the helmet into your chest, and others just let too much light in from behind and the reflections or washout ruins the view. While yet other helmets droop the lens out of alignment with your eyes when your head is to the side or looking up. And then there's the ones that fog up, etc, etc.

But at least see what your options are, ordering blind off the net is cheap but sometimes you really need to get hands, or eyeballs, on something to make the best comparisons.

I'm a welder by trade and I use Speedglas, although I'm not a fan of their new headgear. But I do love the view through their lenses and the add ons, like the adFlo fresh air system and their hard hat attachment is pretty much the best. Some seventeen years using Speedglas myself.

last time i went looking for a new AD hood, i hit every LWS i could find, and tried on nearly every hood.

i narrowed down what elt best on my head, and then narrowed down more on price.
did some price comparison betwen LWS and the web, no LWS would budge off their prices

i ended up buying a miller prohobby from cyberweld

The lws i went to yesterday did not have the hobarts. They had a bunch of $300 hoods in a display case. Honestly the guy that was there did not impress me very much with his knowledge on things. I need to track down a store that has the hobarts to try one on. Per the specs it sure seems better than the more expensive miller.

The hobart is shade adjustable and the head gear is pretty comfy and adjustable as well. The only others Ive tried are old non-AD, a rhino AD, an HF AD and the hobart. Id take the hobart over all of them. If you want I can take a picture of the head gear if you cant find any good pictures online. I know its not the same as trying it on but its pretty darn adjustable at every point IMO.

The speed is irrelevant. The clarity of the lens is the most important thing.

Based on the pics on the hobart and miller sites the head gear looks very similar. I think anything will be an improvement over the HF cheapo i have now.

You are right that difference in speed will mean nothing and like any lens or glass clarity matters most. I did not see any specs on optical clarity for either of the models i was comparing.

Check out the $100 Kobalt one at lowes. I'm very happy with mine, 4 sensors, clarity ratings are solid, large screen, comes with a bag, screens and extra sweatband things. It does have an optical clarity reading listed on it. (I don't recall what it is)
