I'm debating a few different heaters. Any thoughts on these?

I had never heard of King Heaters till I saw them at Lowes. I know a lot of people like the Fahrenheat, but I'm curious about the King ones. Garage is just under 500 square feet.

I love my Fahrenheat but that 211812 King heater looks very nice. It looks like it gives you about 3000 more btu at 6000W than the Fahrenheat and has a remote control!!

The King draws 23 amps vs the Fahrenheats 21 amps. I have a 600 sqft garage, insulated with 11ft ceilings and the Fahrenheat is more than enough, however more is always better right? ha ha.

I do know of a fella that has a King 5000w heater installed in his garage and he is very happy with it. From reading the reviews and knowing someone personally that likes King I would say that the 211812 King heater would work great for you. The Fahrenheat is rated to heat up to 500sqft, the bigger King says greater than 300sqft, and the smaller King says 400sqft.

I guess you would have to factor in the cost of each unit and how much juice each uses. The Fahrenheat is rated at 100sqft more than the smaller King heater but is the same wattage. To me it would be between the Fahrenheat and the larger King unit.

I have a 5000w G73 Dayton. I've used it to keep my 960 sq/ft in the mod 60s in mild - 40~50F - weather. I left it on "just below LO" last night in the 12x24 work room. It is 31F this AM, light snow, wind from the NW at 20 gusts to 35. It was 70F out in the work room.

Thanks for the comments. I was all set on the Fahrenheat but the larger King looks pretty sweet other than the almond color. I have to do this soon. It's cold as heck today.

I'd forget about brand of electric heater, and buy by the features you want. All electric heaters are 100% efficient.

1. Wattage
2. Mounting bracket to suit your needs
3. Thermostat that you like
4. Fan noise
5. Country of origin if you want US made

For those with a Ouellet heater: how is the fan noise? Do they cycle on and off in an annoying fashion?

Thanks...

The fan in mine pushes 300 CFM so it is noticeable, but I think most effective heaters will be noisy. I don't find it annoying, but it all depends on how close you work to the heater. I mounted mine fairly close to where I stand most of the time so I have the worst case scenario. It sounds like a strong fan.

is it like this at Amazon? It's $590.00.
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000NCI8AO/?tag=atomicindus08-20
There is one at Northern Tool that looks like this one, but it's 3 phase.

Amazon one says ,Hard-wires into a 240V single phase circuit. BTU Output: 34,120, Amps: 41.67
Looks like you would need what; about a 50 amp breaker?

I have 5 garages and have installed King Pic-A-Watt heaters in every one of them. These mount into the wall, have a fan for forced air and work great. 2 of my garages are 2 car garages and one heater will heat them well. I live in Ohio and keep the temp. around 40 deg. unless I want to work out there then I turn it up.

I have the G73 Dayton 5000 watt unit - also in Detroit. I bought it for quick and easy installation. If I go out to the garage right now at about 20 degrees outside, I will kick on both the electric and a torpedo style kerosene 35,000 btu heater and let it run about 30 minutes. This will get me to around 50 degrees. Then I run the electric to maintain the temp. I don't think it would raise the temp by itself for several hours.

What size is your garage? Is it insulated? I thought a 5k would cover my 490 sq ft garage once I insulate the ceiling.

Dayton and fuh farenheat are the same I think.Either will heat that space and both are made in the USA. Put a dayton sticker on mine I don't think you could tell the difference.

I can get my 700sq ft up to temp in no time.

You may want to look at this one.

Dr Infrared Heater, DR988 5600W Portable Industrial Heater

I bought it based on the reviews. It has only gotten cold enough here to use it once but I was happy. I'll probably be buying another one.

Go online and find a simple heat load calculator -- that way you will know what BTU's you need to heat the shop.

I have been using Fahrenheat 4000 watt units --model NPH4A -- it comes with a plug and will go into a standard 240 outlet. It is linked in the Lowes page for the other heaters. The 5k and 7.5k are direct wire and require more power. How much power do you have? The Fahrenheat units have enclosed heating elements and are designed to last and can easily be cleaned out with a blast of air. The others may as well .. I am not familiar with them.

In my case I like the two heat setting -- I would rather have the units running all the time when I'm out in the shop on low then 1/2 the time cycling on and off - the shop is more comfortable.

Some of the larger units are quite loud. While it is obviously more expensive -- two units on opposite sides with heat controls will provide the greatest comfort and is the way to go if you plan on having the space for a long time.

First post here but may be able to help.
I bought the King KBP2406 for my ~600 sq ft partially insulated garage and it works fairly well. We haven't had any really cold days yet but it does a nice job of raising the temperature to a point that it's comfortable. I also like the fact that it's made in the USA, Seattle even (my home town). Important to note that it does NOT have a remote, not sure why Lowes says it does.

I bought a CRT mount and used it to mount the heater from my wall.

I ordered the EKB2450 from Lowe's - it is supposed to be here Wednesday. I'll post a review after I get it installed, should be right away, it's cold here!

I've got about 530 sq ft. Walls and doors are insulated....the ceiling is only partially insulated.
I think the difference between here and those in the southern areas is we need to not only warm up the room, but the objects in the room and the floor are also very cold...and they radiate that coldness. These guys in the south get a cold day, but I don't think its the same.

Where in Detroit are you?

Got a ticket with my Chevelle at the very first Downriver Cruise.
If you want to stop by and see what this heater does, let me know.

Very elegant looking workbench there. Homemade I assume? A fellow bike mechanic as well:0) I'll have to take some pictures of my "bike" shop. I also mounted my heater close to where I am standing most of the time which is the bike repair stand.

I just might take you up on that in another week or two. What city are you in?

Hi. New to the forum but have lurked for some time.

I have decided to install a Fahrenheat Ceiling-Mount 7500 Watt, 31.3 Amp, 25,600 BTU heater in my 2 stall attached garage. I seriously looked into natural gas but took some time to really track how much time I spend out there in the cold months. Bottom line, for the difference in installation cost even with electric at 4x gas the break even point is years out.

Looking forward to heat this winter.

Only about 500. I chose the 7500 because it can be wired to less wattage, thus less heat of course. Thought for the price a nice to have feature. I may only need to configure 5000W. Rochester NY gets pretty cold in the winter.

Just thought you could save a few bucks with the smaller unit. May not be a bad idea to have the 7,500 just in case.

Just an update:
Fahrenheat Ceiling-Mount 7500 Watt heater is on it's way.

Installation plan:
40A 2p breaker in basement box
Run 8/2 NMB to NEMA 6/50 outlet in garage
Attach NEMA 6-50PRA Heavy Duty Welder Power Cord to heater

Thoughts?

I had mine wired direct. No plug in. I also had a wall thermostat installed i would consider that for sure.

another vote for direct wire. If your electrical service has the capacity for 7500watt, and a faster warmup would be benneficial, I would not derate the heater to 5000watt..

The biggest problem/complaint Ive ever come across with the electric heaters whether its forced air in a house or a hanging heater likes yours is that its dry heat, kind of like living inside a toaster is best way I can describe it.
If you can keep a 5 gallon bucket of water in the corner of the garage and top it off as it evaporates you might be happy with the results;)

For those that have gone this route, can you give any input as to the increase in your electric bill from running the heater?

I was thinking about this as an option for my garage as the way mine's configured, gas isn't really an option.

My garage is mostly insulated, and I'm not in there every day, but on the chance that I needed to it would be nice to be able to warm it up and work on a weekend or the odd occasion. Mine is a 2 car with an extra long end, so it's about 650 sq ft.....

I bought mine at Grainger, so my Fahrenheit came in a Dayton box. :)

First year I had it (2 years ago), I got killed on electric because I was keeping it warm while I wasn't in it (like an idiot). Last year I only cranked it up when I was in it and it was much more reasonable.
