Picking location for door

I am currently having a garage built (30x40) that will have two doors. I can pick the location of both doors. One door is 12x13 and the other is 9x9. The 12x13 door is for a future RV and I figure I would place it at the right most portion of the garage. The 9x9 is more difficult. Eventually I want a hoist in the garage. I would prefer to have as much middle space as I can get, so the hoist can go further toward the right.

I want to make sure that when the door is installed it will line up with the eventual location of the hoist. Basically I need to know where the centerline of the hoist would be given a 2-post configuration. How close to the wall can it get?

The best wisdom I've seen on the subject is to allow enough space between your side wall and the door centerline so you can pull an axle. In that situation, the axle length is controlling and the width of the lift you pick out is irrelevant.

BTW - The front to back distance away from the door isn't as easy to figure out as one would hope...

If you embrace your axle as the measuring stick of your layout, another big issue you are going to come up against are the saw cut joints in your slab. You should really pick out a specific lift model, talk to your concrete contractors, and get those joints on the plans so they don't end up too close to a lift post. (Finding out that kind of problem late in the process can realm ruin your day/week/year/etc.)

Also think about if you plan on having either a tool box or bench along the wall you are moving the lift closer to. My Dad has a lift that is way too close to the bench for my liking.

RV door to the side.....then center the 9x9 between the RV door and the other side
