I teach college courses<snip>, although I choose my battles (I do not teach English). I do however tell them that it will not cut it when they are in the workplace....or applying/submitting resumes/interviewing to get into the workplace.

My spelling and grammar ****, but the above is so true.
I work in IT for a Fortune 100 company and we have not stop hiring through this down turn. Quickest way to have your resume tossed, use bad grammar or miss spell words.

Ok I **** at spelling, and I **** at typing. So sometimes I goof a word due to ignoance or sometimes to lack of hand-keyboard cordination. I try to make an honest attempt at improving. So guilty as charged. BTW, I am at times to lazy or rushed to proof read.

Well I tend to find that my spelling is OK before the first beer
Slips off a bit after the second beer.
After the third beer, yeh , I know I should stop posting.......
Added to that , not everyone has English as their native language....fortunately I can speak American fairly fluently.

Uhhh, ok.

I find a few misspelled words much easier to wade through than a whole posting done as a single paragraph.

Something written in all lower case is easier for me to go through than all caps- at least if there is some spacing or structure.

One thing that does bug me once in a while is drawers (think toolbox) described as draws. Maybe it is a regional thing.

I dont proofread, reason why. I consider posting on the forum as talking with a group of buddies in the shop, carrying on, cutting up. To me this not a formal paper with footnotes and proven facts. yes i will fix some mistake when I see them, but you see I,m a little slow.

i don't really care about capitalization but i usually attempt to spell right. it don't really bug me much if words are wrong here or there though. i think everyone needs to keep in mind that not everyone has english as a first language. one of my friends speaks english so well you'd never guess it wasen't his first language but he can't write for ****.

I, too, have refrained from making a big deal about spelling and grammar in many of the posts. It does shock me how many people that are otherwise pretty smart make themselves look stupid because they don't take the time or effort to spell check or use punctuation. I feel I've gotten ahead in life by appearing smarter than I really am. (I'm really pretty average.) I wonder how many fairly intelligent people have actually limited their advancement just because they are too lazy to learn to speak or write coherently?

My pet peeve:

I teach college courses that consist of 65% classroom instruction and 35% online work. My students email me a lot, as well as post responses in discussion threads. They have all grown up texting, and as a result, use many abbreviated versions of words, no punctuation, no capitalization, etc.

It is frustrating, although I choose my battles (I do not teach English). I do however tell them that it will not cut it when they are in the workplace....or applying/submitting resumes/interviewing to get into the workplace.

You are right, that your students will be judged much harsher in the workplace. I have rejected many interview candidates based solely on their lack of ability to speak, write, and use proper spelling and grammar.
I hope you grade them accordingly. If not, it just reinforces that they can get by being lazy. Even though you may not teach English, you are in a position to help your students improve on all fronts, while they are still in "learning mode".

Could be the utmost expert on welding, diagnostics or whatever and you're a ******* because you speelt it rong. I spent 42 years working in the printing industry. Proofreading is a large part of what I have done for all those years. Do I notice all the spelling and grammar errors. I sure do, but as long as I can figure out what the person is trying to say it does not bother me one bit. My reason for being here is to learn about garages, tools, equipment, etc. Everyone has a different level of writing skills and you can still learn a lot from someone even if they can't write like an English professor.

Agreed. If I want to read perfectly proofread words, I can buy a magazine. If I want good-natured advice from a range of people, I can wade through some errors, and benefit from what the people here are experts at. I wouldn't expect everyone on a Literature forum to know everything about flat-head Fords, and I don't expect everyone here to know anything about proper writing.

As an aside, I've offered on other sites to make edits in guides or how-tos that are posted, in order to make them more readable. I'd be glad to do the same for anybody here. And I don't mean that I'm an expert - just that I might be able to help somebody.

FWIW, my ex-BIL was a good mechanic. But he had to ask me for help to find things in the phone book. That didn't change my view of him any (other things did, but that's irrelevant).

Writing is a tool like our prized shop implements. I try to treat writing with the same respect that I have for my favorite wrenches. What I put into it, I get back.

I wasn't the best student in school, but I learned that the proper way to write, is as important as the proper way to build an engine.

After probably (Which you spelled incorrectly) you use a comma, not period.
Grammar is misspelled.
The more common way to misuse "The" is "Teh". This is a typing error, not a spelling error. I do agree people should catch this error when proof reading though.

I be honest, my grammar is not good, it not even close. I blame it on my local school system, that believe in high school of three years of literture and one year of grammar. most of the grammar was term papers, I still have never wrote a term paper. Dont see no use in it. i really believe it should of been four year grammar.
