Pigment issue

I have been coating garages for a few years. We typically grind floor, squeegee back roll one coat CTM 100% epoxy, flake to 60%to 75% coverage. I have noticed with the tan base coats we get pigment slide after the cure that isnt noticed until the next day. This happens not on every floor but enough to be a pain. I was hoping that someone would know a solution. I was thinking a fast recoatable primer may work? But cant find one that can be re coated in 1 hr.

I can't imagine putting 100% solids material down without a primer. We have a tan poly that can go DTC without issue but no primer on 100% solids is asking for trouble

Are the part A resins coming pre-tinted, or are you mixing the pigment in yourself? If pre-tinted, are you mixing the part A's well before hand?

I can't imagine putting 100% solids material down without a primer. We have a tan poly that can go DTC without issue but no primer on 100% solids is asking for trouble

Thanks for the reply. Although we have o ly been doing garages for a few years I have applied epoxy for the last 15 yr. On our commercial projects we always do two coats 100% solids without primer. I have never had a floor fail exept one issue with moisture about 8 yrs back.

Pre pigmented. I bet your right. Thinking back the floors that have done this have been ones that my son in law was the mixer. I am going to make sure he is drilling the pre tinted A's better.
Trying to slow down in life and not do so many larger projects is why we have been promoting the garage floors. I have done polyaspartic but really like the epoxy, it just looks better and lays thicker even though it is a day in a half vs the one day systems.

Yes, let's hope that is the issue! I have seen similar issues when the pigment does not get mixed properly..

I'm with you, I love you epoxy for the look and ease of application, but love polyurea for the fast turn around!

You never know how long the A Side has been on the shelf and so as Benwah mentioned, always a good idea to mix it well. That pigment will hug the bottom of the can like Mississippi Mud!

Agree with the mixing issue as the problem. We too are surprised you don’t prime? We have a primer that dries in a couple of hours and the primer prevents the thick 100% solids epoxy from sinking in and makes the floor thicker and holds the flecks better. Even though the primer adds to the cost it cuts down on epoxy usage by 1/3 since the epoxy isn’t absorbing in, plus much better adhesion since the primer is thinner by design to sale into the pores better.
