hey guys , so yesterday i drilled out some 16" holes with a 36" bell and planned to pour them this morning but when i went to the job site all of my piles collapsed... they are six feet deep and im wondering if digging holes with a hoe would be the way to go since the sandy soil will keep falling in

im seeing less pile driving lately. they seem to be going towards very wide "spreadfoot" foundation footers. we own a vacation home on at a local beach community and the soil is basically sand. they are building a huge elementary school with concrete footers that are anywhere from 6' to 10' wide. the the beachfront home in front of us is having a 65' addition built on the back. the footers are 3' wide. standard here used to be 20" wide X 10" deep or so. Apparently they have it engineered right, if it can hold a two story school it can hold a garage.

In Houston, for residential construction where piers are called for, they are drilled the day of the pour. This is to reduce the chance of collapse and also for liability to prevent someone from falling in.
If the soil is really bad, they will use caissons (steel lining), but that gets really expensive.
