I can't get harborfreight.com to load right now but honestly they offer your second option but with a true vise-grip style mechanism. I saw them reco'd on this board years ago & ordered a set. They're my go-to hose pinch pliers. I think I paid ~$5.99 several years back. I just used 'em to pinch off a rear brake hose for a 14b swap last week

I also have some Craftsman red plastic ones but they're flimsy.

In the market for a set of hose pinch off pliers. I can't decide between these two styles. Anyone have experience with both and have a preference?

Get the SK set. They are the same as the craftsman set too if you can still find those (cheaper).

The cman drop-ship direct from the OEM, so they are exactly the same as truck brands...

I have those gearwrench ones in the first post. I like them, but i can't say I've ever used any others to compare them to.

I have the same but with K-D markings. Had them since 1993 and never used them until a month or so ago. They do the job.

I have the SK set, they are really nice, but opening them is weird, you have to just pull on the handles, there is no release mechanism. It is nice as there is no lock to get in the way, it was just odd the first time I used them, almost couldn't figure out how to get them to open.

I use a small pair of HF long nose locking pliers with some rubber guard hose ove the serrated jaws. Cheap and effective.

I have the hard plastic style green Matco and love them they are not like the cheaper versions they are high quality and no rusting to worry about or heat transfer.

I bought the SK so I wouldn't have red handles, I would have rather had blue ones! I might have to buy the imperials now and sell the SK ones.

I have the Normal Craftsman, the ones the op just bought, the plastics ones as well as the HF clamp style, and I need to make a pair of vise grips now thanks to GJ. They all come in handy it just depends on the hose and the location.

My favorite by far is the HF screw style I bought 2 sets they were so cheap... and well built

followed by the ratcheting Craftsman Like the OP just got.

If you like the Vise Grip style, check out the Vise Grip model RR.

I have a couple of these and they work pretty good.
The Petersen versions can be purchased reasonably on eBay because a lot of people don't know what they are.

The harbor freight pliers are junk. There's too much play side to side causing the jaws to twist and be offset from each other when locking the mechanism down. It's very difficult to create a air tight pinch with them.

I'm going to get the 3 sizes of the kd/gearwrench set - 3791, 2, 3. Going with the green handles for the sk set isn't worth the extra money. Thanks for the replies!

I had about 3 or 4 versions but usually used long nose vise grips. I actually used them rarely as I hated to pinch hoses. Unseen dsmsge could come back and bite you, specially on older hoses.

Just got a version of gearwrench pinch pliers. Exactly like the SK ones listed in the OP post.

Agree with Strouty... weird way to open them. No locking clip. I got the small and medium. Works well.

PSA... don't test them on your finger. It hurts the whole time you are trying to open them.

Will add pictures when I can.

Ha. I bought them when Craftsman was selling them, mainly because of that weird gimmicky opening style. Yeah, they're nice. Not much else to say about em.

I got a set of the SK ones a couple years ago. Immediately tested a pair out on my fingers, then quickly realized I had no idea how to release them. :spit:

Yep... why I added my PSA comment... dont test em on you finger.

If I lived near a Harbor Freight... I might have looked at theirs but doubt i would have went that way. I have a dislike for vice grips.

FWIW... I had the other style with the locking clip part but they were borrowed and lost.

I chose this SK style but tagged gearwrench because I read this thread.

Made in the U.S.of A. Too.

I have a lot of experience with both styles the OP listed in the first post. The first pair took a while to break in and I didn't care for them and gave them to my employee. After break in, they actually work quite well and would be my preferred choice. The second style (KD) I have used for decades and still do. I have worn several pair out, the teeth on the ratchet will wear overtime.

I also have the HF vise grip style, JUNK, the jaws will twist and not stay lined up when depressed hard.

Note, I use them for different purposes then most. I need them to clamp off 100% under suction as I am testing a pump or clamp off a bypass hose that could be upto 100 psi so my use may be more demanding.

I've worn through the ratcheting mechanism on quite a few of the KD145 Gearwrench/NAPA style. Not sure if Gearwrench will cover them under warranty, but I've been wanting to try the Imperial style for a while now. Might have to give those GW or Lang pliers a try when my last few pairs wear out.

Wore out the ratcheting mechanism? Damn.
