my Matco guy said those will rob you of torque due to the amount of slop in them and tend to break a lot.he talked me out of buying them from him.?

:dunno:

YMMV

:see:

I'm unsure of your type of use or what you'll work on but, this is a good starter set.

The set is missing the 1/2 :wtf: and the universal joint is pinned but the set is still a good value.

I've used the pinless type from Matco/Armstrong/craftsman for over 10 years in a professional shop environment on the end of TIMAX impacts. Although I have worn a couple out, I haven't ever broken one.:dunno:

As noted previously the universal is now pinless as well.

It is missing 19mm, but includes 3/4 (basically the same). Also missing the 1/2 but I don't really care about the SAE anyway... those are just bonus to me. Also, the universal IS pinless even though it isn't in the photo.

That sounds like sour grapes.

Every universal joint will reduce the torque with a non-zero angle over some of its range. Likely over all of its range. (Unexpectedly, a non-CV joint might actually increase it over certain arc segments.)

A loose but precision joint is more likely to have low friction. A tight joint that wears is more likely to create a notch that binds, robbing power and making the torque really inconsistent.

The 'more likely to break' part could be true, but I would not take the word of a competitor without a heavy dose of salt.

I have a set of these and have never had an issue with them breaking, slipping, etc. Bought them a while ago in a set of every one they make with an impact for about $400 iirc.
