I've looked through various threads that talked about this topic, but I didn't feel they gave me a straight answer for this question.

I'm looking at 3/8 sets really because I want swiveling sockets for use with ratchets and I was looking at this Matco set
http://www.matcotools.com/catalog/product/SBUPM106TB/3-8-10PC-IMP-MM-6PT-SKT-SET/

What do you guys think about using only pinless swivel sockets to replace pinned swivel sockets?

I think pictures help so...

(disregarding them as impacts, just the socket design) pinless type exclusively?

in place of pinned type?

I don't see an issue with it. The impact swivels might be a little thicker than chrome and may not articulate as far but it does save you from buying 2 sets.

I don't think he meant using chrome with an impact. Vice versa, meaning can he use his impact swivels with a ratchet and not need chrome.

That really depends on. The chrome are lower profile, and sometimes flex to further angles.

I always tell people to start with impact and treat chrome as a specialty case by case, as-needed basis.

The impacts will fit a wide variety of hand tool instances, and chrome comes into play as a specialty tool. CHROME IS SPECIALTY when it comes to sockets.

Ive got the matco 3/8 swivels at work and use them with my impact and my air ratchet. Never had a problem with them not swiveling enough.

Yea, my thought isn't about impact vs chrome, sorry for the confusion.

I think the pictures might've confused more than helped, but I changed the bottom one now to hopefully show it better.

Don't get the "impact" hinged type. They are worst of both worlds. Too weak for impact, too thick for tight spaces.

I came into work one day to repair a disaster truck a tech from another shift tried to work on. He ended up really botching it up and left me with no info. Parts were cut and hacked all over the places, other parts destroyed. It was evident he destroyed a shop sledge hammer in the process.

What happened? He tried to remove something and did not remove all bolts. So tried beating it off with a sledge. At some point it is obvious he discovered the remaining bolt. I can tell this because the bolt head was all mangled and I could see the remains of one of those crappy hinged sockets exploded all over the floor.

Through the use of an impact wobble and my snappy pinned swivels, got 'er right out with my 2215 impact and part easily fell off on it's own.

I think this thread is a Pinned VS. Pinless thread.

In any case I have both, I like both, but I like the pinless design a little better.

Well yes, but a little more to it, maybe I'm overthinking it.

My question to you then, if you had to replace your sockets, would you buy both the pinless and pinned types, or would you just buy the pinless type? (just forget that they're impact for a sec)

Just get the pinless impacts and forget the others for now.

Biggest advantage I see is, once youve used the pinned sockets for a while they will get sloppy and aggravate you to no end. With the pinless the spring inside will take up the slop. Ive always wondered why guys get an extra set of pinned swivel sockets, when they could just get a swivel attatchment and just replace THAT when it gets loose. Seems like a lot of extra money spent to me.

it's all about clearance and most new cars don't have much... but if you don't use them often that is definitly the less expensive way to go.

You've clouded the issue throwing "pinless" into the mix. Pinned vs Pinless impact sockets is a whole 'nuther issue mostly centered around durability.

What you're really asking is whether impact, ball and socket, swivels are better than chrome, universal joint, swivels. The correct answer is the impact style are better when there is enough clearance for them. If you buy both you'll likely use the impacts about 90% of the time. The other 10% is where the chrome save your ***.
