Does anyone make a thread guage for the various sizes and types of pipe fittings? I.E. NPT, compression etc. Got a bunch of random fittings and can never rememeber what one is what.
Pipe threads are standard for the size of pipe. Not much to remember if you know the size. You can have different flair nut sizes and the same size tubing.
I grew up on the farm and working in machine shops. After using drills, taps, nuts and bolts you know the size by looking at them. Plumbers know because they use them all the time.
I am a general contractor now and architect. I have done a lot of plumbing through the years and I still miss the size of gas and valve fittings.
It is one of those things that bug you and you just live with it. You are not the only one. LOL
NPT is a coarse tapered thread (except for 1/8") and compression is a fine straight thread.
NPT threads go by the pipes internal diameter while compression threads go by the tubings external diameter. SO a 1/2" pipe thread is going to be much larger in diameter than a 1/2" compression thread.
I would link you but my phone makes that fail. Google "Aeroquip fitting identification guide" one of the results on the first page should be the PDF of the guide. A thread gauge and a caliper should finish things up.
Gets you NPT, SAE, several types of metric, British, etc.
