Ordered some 3/4" pipe through a friend from Siskin Steel in Chattanooga to make two 8' long bars for my coffeehouse. Same friend said to get the fittings through Ebay rather than Lowes. Wondering what you guys would do. Our city does have a small supply store btw.

Thanks
John

Use one of the pipe suppliers in Chattanooga....are you talking socket weld or threaded? I used to live in Chatt and there are several pipe suppliers w fittings including Siskin.

If one of the locals carries Ward fittings then that's where I'd go. AFAIK, Ward is the only company that still makes malleable iron pipe fittings in the US. A lot of the big box stuff is Chinese or Indian, and neither of them pay much attention to the threads from the standpoint of whether they're useable threads or what angle they're tapped at relative to the correct angles.

Supplyhouse.com is a good online supplier of domestic fittings at good prices. Most everything I looked at on Ebay was imported junk at no great savings over domestic fittings from supplyhouse. https://www.supplyhouse.com/Black-Fittings-173000

You would probably be ok with box store fittings if you plan to clean them up or paint them. One of our local "ranch and home" stores carries Anvil fittings. They are another premium US-made (mostly) brand. They work great and look great right out of the box.

I agree, buy from local supplier. Many box stores and online sellers are mostly CHINA . Pipe can be garbage and may rip threads as you thread it. In your case , it wouldn't matter since not for pressure work.
Local guy might even thread it for you .

Thanks for sharing fellas. I'm certain that some good stuff can be had on ebay. But I'm going to a local store, buy a fitting or two and test. The Lowes fittings were...ok for my first project. But if the local stuff works better...I'm in.

Thanks again.

For just a few fittings I would go to a local plumbing supply house or big box store. If it is something odd ball I would look online.
When I was piping the compressed air lines in my shop with the rapid air system I wanted to use a stainless steel street 90 to locate the quick connects pointing towards the floor. Being a plumbing engineer and designing hospitals, schools and other large projects I called my friends at the supply house. Their price was sky high. On Amazon I found the needed fittings, made in America. After paying shipping and having to order extra I still paid about 1/3 the supply house price.
Sometimes it doe not pay to buy locale.
