Ok so i want to get a vented heater out in my garage by next winter because well.. its COLD.. all walls have R15, no windows insulated garage doors. unknown R value in attic ide say maybe a R20. garage is 25x30, 8ft walls.
I plan to get a 45000 Btu ceiling mounted heater. i have natural gas at the home but to run the yellow pipe will be roughly 175 feet.. so for now i was just going to put the propane jets into it.. and use my 100lb tank.

Now ide like to just put the pipe through the wall large enough for future upgrade to natural gas.. as the propane will be outside piped in.. i was thinking 1" black pipe should be large enough for future upgrade also?.. then ill just switch the jets back then to natural gas

Thoughts? any ideas..

1" HDPE should be good for the run. You should only need 1/2 inch through the wall though unless there will be multiple gas consumption items out there in the garage.

3/4" PE Gas pipe will flow that for 175 feet with about 0.2 inches pressure drop.

Be aware that you can't use that pipe to flow gas above ground. You'll need to use an anodeless service riser at each end to bring you up out of the ground and transition you back to steel. Your above ground portion should be done in black steel pipe, painted or coated to prevent rusting. Typically you would sleeve your service entrance.

I'd put a shutoff on the inlet to your run so if it gets cut you have a good way to isolate it.

You'll also want to bury a tracer wire so you can find it someday if you need to with a pipe locator.

If I understand your question correctly - 1" will be more than enough. In fact most would run 3/4" and 1/2" would work.

Yea i know about the risers with yellow pipe. Bassicly i just wanted to get the pipe out the wall so for now i can use the heater with propane jets in it.. Then later on, if ever.. I can bury the nat gas yellow pipe and hook up to the existing pipe thats penetrating the wall already so i dont have to re do that section..
Thats why i wasnt sure if 1" was too large.. 1/2" too small?

I used 3/4" black pipe because of the length of the run and the BTU of my heater

1/2" was not going to be large enough
