Pipe threader and die

Hey all.

So I want to make some black pipe furniture- tv stand for home and a couple wood top bars for my coffee shop customers.

Pretty sure I want to cut and thread 3/4" black pipe. Home Depot sells Ridgid tools (ratcheting threader and 3/4 die) for about $200.

Any thoughts on these tools?

Thanks
John

I made up around 40 pipe clamps with a Harbor Freight ratcheting pipe threader. Slow but worked. The Harbor Freight threader is just what you would expect from them. Kind of clunky, very unrefined but it worked. I'd say a threader from a name brand trusted plumbing tool maker would work very well. You'll need a pipe vise as well

A straight cut makes starting the die easier, so you might want a pipe cutter, a heavy duty tubing cutter, as well.

When I wanted some 3/4" pipe clamps, I bought scrap yard pipe and the ones with no threads got a ****** welded on. I found Princess Auto surplus threaded 3" ******* for 19 cents each.....cut them in half.

If you do thread, get a pipe cutter, as suggested, (I have the import version and it works well) and bevel the ends to make starting easier.

Do you have any places where you might find a used one such as antique mall, flea market, garage sale, etc. Used can go cheap, not a lot of demand. Depends on how patient you are. I know you risk of it being dull.

I picked up a couple at the fleamarket, I was after the 1/2", but I had to take the 3/4" as well. The 3/4" was an old brand which my old memory has deleted. I was warned that it was dull. NOS cutters were more than a new Ridgid. I was able to sharpen it with a Dremel and a round stone. Works OK ,now. You'll want some high sulfur cutting oil, like Ridgid dark, the ordinary stuff doesn't work worth a damm. We tried that work. The stuff I have is by Gunk.

I find the 3 way threaders to be easier and faster than the ratchet ones so long as you have the room to swing them.

They can be found cheap on ebay if you're willing to chance having to buy a set of dies for them.

Also put a lot of thought into how you are going to assemble your designs. It's real easy to design pipework frames which are impossible to put together.

Tri head is the way to go. Probably 90 percent of what you commonly need is on the one head. Only downfall is threading in place, and really how often is that needed

I got a 2 sets of ratchet handles, a Ridgid and an English one with 5 sets of dies between them for £10 pretty hard to go wrong with used as long as you can get a good look at the dies first.
