Pipe Wrench question

Does anyone know of a pipe wrench with an extruding jaw on the sides. For example I was trying t get to a pipe plug on a spindle and the plug was slightly recessed so is there a type of pipe wrench that has oversized jaws that a wider than the handle? I have not been successful finding a pair but I feel they would be a huge time saver. I hope I explained this well enough. Thank you in advance.

Can you only access the outside of the pipe plug, or is it possible to access the inside. If you can access the inside of the pipe Ridgid makes something called an "internal wrench" Cat #31405, Model 342. it fits in pipes from 25mm. through 50mm.

Ridgid also makes single size Pipe internal pipe extractors that can handle smaller size Pipes. Model # 80 -89.

For gripping the outside of the pipe, if the diameter isn't to large, you could use a basin wrench. The Ridgid model # are 1010 and 1017 for pipe between 10mm. and 30mm. , and 1019 for pipe between 30mm. and 60mm.

No I have a set of internal pipe wrenches (really old bluepoints). The plug is actually a rounded off square plug for example where it is close to flush on a round object. A regular pipe wrench doesn't have the Bite because of the fat part of the handle by the adjustable nut. Sorry i don't have pictures I'm off site now I will try to fabricate an example and take pictures.

You may have to resort to drilling out the plug, then carefully

use an easyout for lack of better tool. There are also tools that

look like sockets and work like easyouts. I have been sucessful

by drilling carefully until there are female threads almost visible,

then snaking the rest of the male threads out with a hammer and

chisel. What ever you do, don't rush the project. It is easy to

throw the baby out with the bathwater...

I am not doing a good job at all explaining this. The spindle is for the hot slabs at a reheat furnace. The spindle is 16 feet long and 4 1/2' wide I am looking for a pipe wrench with WIDE jaws. The plug is 1 1/2" if I drill it I would need a mag drill. I have not seen an easy out that large. I am going to assume the tool I'm looking for doesn't exists. If I had to get it out I am capable but time and repetition are the issues.

weld or braze a nut on it and use a regular wrench to remove it.

Welding is what I'm currently doing. I weld a 1" ****** to it filling In the center and using a regular pipe wrench. Thanks for all the replies. I was just looking for an easier softer way but I guess it just is what it is.

My hunch is you'd need to fab 'custom' wide jaws as there's nothing on the shelf like that afaict.
Just running the idea thru my head w/o looking at a wrench, the mod wouldn't be that difficult as long as a good welder and a halfway decent machinist were involved....

Just saw this on amazon. Don't know whether you would have had enough clearance for it but just in case your other method doesn't work. KD Tools 2595 square drive chain wrench., 5/8" to 5".

use a large nut and weld that on the inside to the pipe plug. Then you can just use a crescent wrench.

Another option is to make a large EZ out. But I have them as large as 3/4" square and it takes a 13/16 drill - Proto p/n 9528, current P/N J9528 (Granger lists them $26)
