Maybe I am out of line but whenever this happens, it is such a buzz kill.

I'm at a typical estate/garage sale. Women in the house, guys tearing through the garage. Guys make their piles of stuff and either stand guard or look some more with one eye out on their pile. I see a pile of stuff, and I ask the guy, "Is that your pile?". He says "Yes". In his pile I see a cool vise, small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, and I say, "That's a cool vise. Mind if I look at it?" He says, "It's mine". I say, "Yes, you said that, but would you mind if I look at it?" Then you get the ugly sucking on a lemon face and a dismissive grunt.

Some guys are cool and we both marvel at the neat tool. Others act like old ladies.

End rant.

He's probably been through the scenario with someone who had a "possession is 90% of the law" attitude who wouldn't give it back. I've seen this happen, and the 2nd guy is ripping off the first guy and daring him to start a fight over the tool.

All I know is that @ the flea/garage sales... people seem to get infantile and regress back to childhood... "mine, mine, mine...waaahhhh"! I steer clear, I'm not going to fight over something; if there is something I want I pick it up and don't let go of it until I pay for it... LOL! There is the cultural issue, too... some people can be incredibly aggressive... they seem to be in a survival mode like rats in a cage, fighting over scraps; I'm not going to get in a fight... you can't have it! :)

Actually, I always ask them If they have downloaded the "Ap" for a new set of balls yet since the wifey currently possesses theirs.
LOL.

Given the economy and the fact that it's tools, I always expect nothing less than that behavior.

I met the polar opposite of that guy today. After paying for a few small tools I spotted an older gentleman sitting on a stool with a old 40's nickle base Coleman lantern by his side. I mentioned that's a nice lantern you have there and the next words out of his mouth was "you can have it". Seems he changed his mind because it had a few small dents, $5 and it was coming home along with the tools. Fired right up too.
Makes up for all those sourpuss grouchy pile folks.

we do a fair amount of garage sales.... my wife had picked up a "something" and was calling our daughter to see if she wanted it, some guy grabs it out of her hand and says to the owner ill give you 3 bucks for it... now nothing sets me on the crazy path more than some guy strong arming my wife... but she can hold her own and grabs it back and told him she wasnt interesting in selling it for 3 bucks ...and handed the lady a buck for it. This guy keeps on about he needs it and i told him he was a pretty low a$$hole and started for him, he must have thought he would do better at some other garage sale.. and took off.
This kind of stuff happens alot, and you gotta be careful how things go, you dont know if the guy whos talking to you is an ok guy or an A hole... so you get lots of reactions to "could i see that for minute"
just as bad as that kind of rude behavior is the guy or especially women trying to look in the same tool box as you, pushing and leaning on you trying to move you over to get at what ever they think they see. no one NO ONE seems to ever have heard of taking turns to rummage through a box its who can push the guy who is there out of the way.

You should have told him you thought you saw a crack or damage to mess with em. I bring a milk crate for my pile, simple green and rags:thumbup:

punch him in the mouth and take it quickly.

NEVER punch someone in the mouth. It'll take forever for your hand to heal. You might even end up with HIV or hep D or something.

Take their knee out from the side with lots of force and cripple him. If their knee makes noises, you did it right. You want him to think about his lack of mannners every time the weather changes for the rest of his life.

I've only been going to yard/garage/estate sales for forty years, so my experience is limited:

Yes, there is the occasional bad experience, but overall, I've had more bad experiences in supermarkets than at sales.

No, I don't find great tools for cheap at every sale. Some days are a waste. However, there are enough incredible deals out there to keep me looking at just one more.

Maybe, it's like prospecting for gold. Either one is excited by moving tons of dirt to find one nugget or not so much fun.

99.9% of guys will be happy to let you check it out AFTER they paid for it! I've mistakenly picked tools out of a box on the floor before where some guy says that it's "his pile". Never had a problem, vast majority of guys are respectful. Only thing I can figure is the guy didn't want you holding it up and fawning over it before he paid for it. Sale owner could suspect a hot item and drive the price up. Best to ask to see stuff after things are paid for.

Yeah, I'd just say that guy has been burnt before and wasn't real friendly bc he thought you were going to do it again.

That said, yard sales and estate sales do attract a crowd I don't deal well with, at least I wouldn't with the pushy types.
