Piston compressor sound vs. scroll compressor

Grassroots Motorsports posted a video comparing the sound levels of a cheap piston compressor (I think it's a oilless type) versus the Eastwood Elite scroll compressor. It costs around $1899, but the difference in noise is pretty impressive. You can jump to about 6 minutes 30 seconds into the video to get past the intro information and right to the actual demo.

While nice and quiet they picked about the loudest piston compressor you could find to compare it with.

Would have been nice if they compared it to a piston compressor that costs 1899

We have a bunch of scroll vacuum pumps at work, just reversed compressors. They work well, are very reliable, and when they do need work they're easy to work on. They are much quieter than comparable piston or vane units.

Yeah, it's not a real fair comparison - they're just replacing an old cheap one they've had in their shop for a long time with a nice new one, but it does show how quiet scroll compressors can be.

I have one of the Eastwood compressors. Its very quiet. Also, for my heigh constrained mezzanine location, the form factor works better than any of the other 60-80 gallon options.

I've been intrigued by these things but I don't buy the 100,000 hour continuous use claim.... I'm curious to see if Eastwood will still be selling these in 5 years.
Anyone know who manufactures them for Eastwood?

China. Search Alibaba and you might be able to purchase a container of off brand ones.

Scroll's require a lot of oil between the scroll components to seal. Using them to compress makes the oil want to come out which is fine if it's for recirculating purposes (HVAC).

I know Eastwood had some problems with the early units pumping the oil out. Hopefully they have it fixed.

Oh I didn't even notice these were flooded, I just assumed they were dry scrolls which is why I was questioning airend life....still though, time will tell I guess.

Were you expecting "Unvarnished Truth" in advertising? Maybe the Tooth Fairy will bring it.

Amen. One US manufacturer has ads that "spins" selling twice as many units as another. The data they "spin" also points out it's mostly because they only last 1/2 as long as their competitor. They don't say that in the ad.
