Hey all,
I've got a "Homestead Hoist model 3". I bought it at an estate sale. I tore it apart and am cleaning it all up but it sat outside for who knows how long and the cylinder that the piston rides in has some pitting.

My question to you all is, has anyone used Jb weld to smooth up pitted metal before?

It's not hydrolic, it operates on air pressure from the compressor. The piston is 10.25" in dia. with a rubber o ring that seals it off. Im worried that the pitting will tear the o ring and make it unsafe to use.

I am currently looking for a new o ring if anyone has an idea of were such things can be found. The oring is 7mm across and 5 mm deep, but it might have been bigger when it was new.

I have found ZERO out about this unit. The production tag is almost unreadable so I dont know where or when it was made or it's capacity.

If there is interest I'll figure out how to load some pictures.

I purchased O-rings for an old air powered tire changer. I went to a chain and gear company that also has o rings,
Harbor freight also has a make your own o-ring kit.

Try these guys for the o-ring. As for the pitting I don't have a good answer. If it is a ty-rod cylinder you might be able to source a new cylinder barrel at Salem Hydraulics, http://csiequip.com/about/

We used to ream out older air cylinders for re-use on the railroad.
You can actually buy a kit, that will attach to a 3/8" drive electric drill.
It was fairly quick and easy.
We then installed new and slightly larger O-rings, than stamped OS (oversized) on the air cylinders.
