Pittsburgh Pro Sockets

I've seen little tidbits here and there on this board about the latest edition of HF's line of Pittsburgh Pro sockets and ratchets, so today when it was convenient I had to stop by their Bellevue, WA store and check out the situation. I haven't been in HF for years, but I do have a few of their items, notably a set of their Pittsburgh Pro polished combination wrenches (India) and a small set of 3/8"-drive metric hex bits (China), both of which live in my "road box" and both of which have gotten my old beater off the side of the road a couple of times.

Anyway, the new Pittsburgh Pro stuff looks shockingly good :shocking:

Everything that I saw was clean and uniformly finished, including the insides of the sockets. Their spline sockets looked nicer than those black-oxide Craftsman spline sockets. The ratchets had smooth action, and the mechanisms fit tightly in the heads (unlike those old-school import ratchets that we all know from days past, and are still available in HF's and others' $9.99 1/4 & 3/8"-drive SAE & metric socket sets). The roto-ratchets were particularly enticing; Genius, Titan, and GearWrench sell the same ratchets for double the price. My gosh, what happened here? Almost everything came from Taiwan rather than China or India. The quality is evident. Of course, this isn't true for most of the other areas of the store, but the new sockets really did impress me, and they seem to be holding the line on the prices.

Now, I'm not rushing to dump my Proto tools; I prefer to buy USA-made products. And I am surprised that HF still skips sizes in their sets, especially common ones like 12mm. But overall I really was impressed at what Harbor Freight has done to respond to concerns from people like us, and I wonder if the writing is on the wall for the likes of Craftsman and even Mac. I would hate to see Craftsman go, as they once were the cornerstone of my toolbox. But why pay high prices for Chinese Crafstman tools when you can buy a similar and possibly better imported tool for substantially less at HF? If these exact tools were made in the USA and sold as Craftsman or another good USA brand name, I think they would sell like crazy, even at Craftsman prices.

I cleaned up on the clearance sales they had on all their impact sockets before they came out with the green-colored "Pro" packaging. Impact socket sets, deep sockets, in both 3/8 and 1/2" - at a fraction of their already low price. I think the smaller sets were as cheap as under $4/ea, and the big deep sets were around $12, I believe.

They appear to be the same quality as the new ones, but instead of 'Pittsburgh PRO' stamped on them, it just says 'Taiwan." I was really surprised to see how well finished they are, and I've been using them with my breaker bars ever since I've gotten them, haven't had a job for an impact wrench since, but they sure seem to be well-made.

I got a set of 1/2" metric shallow sockets today. I think they were on sale, and I used a 20% off coupon. Paid $11.86 out the door. They look decent, just have to see how they perform.

Their new "pro" Stuff look pretty good. They look better than cm. I really wanted get their new low profile double head ratchet. I got their 8 pieces swivel impact socket set for $12. Made in Taiwan and look quite good. One SO socket goes for $60. This 8 piece set is a darn good deal.

I've been tempted to pick that one up, myself... Been waiting for it to go on sale, but since it's so new, I might just have to use the 20% coupon on it...

I am also waiting for it to go on sale so I can use 20% coupon on top of sale. I also want to get the 3/8 low profile non-flex version. They seem to be pretty popular. They are always out when I goes there. I regret not getting the aluminum handle ratcheting spline wrench. They don't sell those any more.

I have the same impression of them. I got the SAE/Metric set with ratchet for my Jeep/trail box and was pretty impressed with them, like you mainly the insides. When compared to the 3/4 Pittsburg set I got along time ago, mainly since i was snapping 1/2 Cman like twigs on a pinion nut, you'd think it was Cman. The 3/4 set looks like they casted it in asphalt the insides are so rough.

The ratchet however is painful to turn and listen to. I opened it up and it was pretty much dry. I added some super lube and it helped some. I'll just throw my $2 new britian or $3 SK in there to use.

Looking at picking up the new-style (p-pro) swivel impact sockets, but my local store only had the old style as of about a week ago. SAE set is in-store only for some reason, so I have to wait them out I guess.
