Pittsburgh: T&T Hardware Closing

T&T Hardware is closing on the Southside of Pittsburgh.

For anyone that has not been there, it is one of the last wood floor hardware stores. This was my Grandfather's store and I worked there as a kid.
Starting Monday Nov.23,2010 50 percent off.

From the Tribune Review

Pittsburgh's South Side was a different neighborhood in 1936 when Stanley J. Tumas scraped together $800 to open his T&T Hardware store on East Carson Street.

"It was an old ethnic neighborhood. People took pride in that neighborhood," said his son, Mike Tumas, 59, of Coudersport, Potter County, who has decided to close the store his father started 74 years ago.

The hardware store became a staple of the neighborhood anchored by the nearby J&L Steel mill, he said.

"Guys would get laid off. Their wives would say, 'You're painting the house,' " Mike Tumas said. "We did well. We did a good business."

And the business grew over the years. It doubled in size when Stanley Tumas knocked down a wall separating the building.

Father and son worked hard.

"You spent vacations, days off, working at the store," Mike Tumas said. "That was our life."

But T&T and other neighborhood hardware stores found it hard to compete with big box chain stores and a changing market. Modernization -- fax machines and computers -- proved difficult for veteran shopkeepers used to sales receipt books with 50 pages in them, Mike Tumas said.

"My dad's idea of a fax machine was to hand you a receipt and say, 'Run this down the corner,' " Mike Tumas said.

Three people will lose their jobs when T&T closes before the end of the year. Tumas said he tried to sell the business but found no takers. He plans to sell the building.

"A lot of commercial accounts told me they were leaving Pittsburgh and Allegheny County because of the taxes," he said. "What commercial businesses are on the South Side anymore?"

Hardware stores used to dot the area -- three in Mt. Washington, two in Allentown, four in the South Side.

"We ran longer than most," said Mark McNally, T&T's manager.

It was an uphill run.

Home Depot said its sales during the third quarter totaled $16.6 billion, a 1.4 percent increase from the third quarter of fiscal 2009. Lowe's Cos. Inc. reported sales for the quarter increased 1.9 percent to $11.6 billion, up from $11.4 billion in the third quarter of 2009.

"It's hard to fight the big guys -- they are so big," said Duquesne University marketing professor Audrey Guskey. "These are family owned, the money stayed here, and the owners poured their hearts and souls into the business."

The inventory at T&T Hardware, kept in homemade wooden drawers and metal bins, will be liquidated before the store closes, Tumas said.

It's always too bad to see stores like that go away. My neighborhood hardware store closed a few years ago; it had been open continuously since the 1920s, and owned by the same couple since just after WWII when the husband came home from the war. He passed away and his wife continued to run the place for a few more years, but she was in her 80s and finally decided it was time to retire. It was a great store - all the hardware (nuts, bolts, nails, etc.) was in bins instead of blister packs, you could buy rope by the foot, they sharpened saws and fixed windows, all done the same way it had been for 80 years. Fortunately, there's still a couple other decent hardware stores within a mile or two.

When I lived on Long Island I used to drive past Home depot to go to the hardware store. They knew what you were talking about even if you didn't. Plus I'd be in and out before I reached the door at the Depot.

Around here, Lowe's used to have better prices than the locally owned hardware stores and lumber yards. Now the locally owned stores are often cheaper than the big box store and have MUCH better service.

Mom and Pop = Great customer service! And a first name basis:)

Big box stores = Customer DISSERVICE:mad:

Try getting a window screen re-screened at Slowes or Whoredepot It ain't gonna happen. I'm glad I can shop the Mom and Pop store and free coffee, not like HD that's for contractors only:confused:

It's sad to see that go! We are a family owned flooring store and have been since 1969 and we def feel the pressure form the big box stores. Our local hardware store went out of business a few years ago and it's a shame because they used to have every odd type of piece you'd need that Lowes didn't carry and everyone who worked there knew exactly how to put it in and what exactly you would need to complete the job. I wish more people would stop worrying about a few dollars here and there and start putting it back into US made merchandise and local businesses. If that could happen, the US economy would turn around and more money and better lives for everyone in our country.

I always hate to hear stories like that. I have a local hardware store around the corner, it's a true value but it's still just a small little neighborhood store. It's in a small old strip mall that my grandparents used to go to all the time when I was a kid. It had a hardware store, grocery store, halmark drug store and a small restaurant. The grocery store left many years ago, as did the drug store. The hardware store is the only thing left and I know someday it won't be there anymore. It is a very well stocked store that I am constantly running to for nuts and bolts and many other things. It also is a full service small engine repair so they stock many parts for outdoor equipment, I buy all my carb rebuild kits and fuel lines and starter rope from them. I try to support them as much as possible but things like power tools and saw blades and some other things are 2-3 times as much as online or the box store. I know if this store closes I will miss it deeply because I don't know anywhere else that stocks the assortment of hardware and odd things the do.

So sad to see it go,I remember a store in the pittsburgh area in 1976 called Ratners(not sure of the spelling) it looked just like the T & T store. Soon they will all go that way so very sad.

It is sad. I am a Beaver County PA native and worked at Baden Hardware and Plumbing when in high school. A big part of that business was servicing the mills - I remember making many deliveries to the American Bridge plant in Ambridge. That plant is long gone as are many others and so is Baden Hardware. It survived to the 90s or so as I recall. I miss store like that every time I am in Home Depot or Lowes.

Jesus man. It's not just about the tools, you know.

Thank God for mom and pop shops when I try to get parts for my 50+ year old fixtures in my house.

I haven't made it down there yet, but I sure as hell plan on trying to make the trip one day in the next week if I can skip out of work fora bit.

I wish I had time to drive down and check it out before it's gone.

Hey Mike and Alex, either of you know of any good, old hardware stores in NW PA? I've heard Kraus Department Store is worth a look but I haven't stopped in yet.

Same deal in my city. At least I got to go there when it was up and running. Now it's a damn, Yuppie coffee shop. But the leaded glass window still says hardware!

Luckily, there is another old school one about 20 min away.

hardware stores have lower grade tools than HF
most everything in a true value is cheap junk -good riddance

You have apparently never been to a "real" hardware store.

I was at the closing auction for Church & Morse Hardware in CT a few months ago. The place was full of Armstrong, Bonney, Proto, Channelock, Starrett, Browne and Sharpe, Crescent and tons of other Made in USA tools.

Not a Taiwanese or Chinese tool in sight.

I have gotten a few things from kraus. It is definately an old fashion place. I don't know what they have for tools but I got some pieces to hook up my 1950s pink bathroom sink from them.

Very sorry to see it go. I worked up the street at Fuhrer Wholesale as a mechanic and was down there many times getting pipe threaded, odd fastners and other items. All the people were very helpful. I grew up in Pleasant Hills and have and still go to Daniel's in Curry. Very good deals on tools , appliances and of course lots of hardware. Best of luck to all at T&T.

As a project manager for True Value I take offense to this . There are lower price point tools in our plan o grams because people request them. But we still have Channel Lock , Crescent , Klein and many other good quality tools in our sets .

When I started opening Hardware stores for True Value in 1997 a very small amount of our product came from overseas . It was easy to pick out because it smelled so differently . But as time has gone on about 1/3rd of our stuff is Chinese now . It isnt because we dont want to offer American made products , its because we have lost so much manufacturing here . Look at what Irwin has done with buying up good brands and off shoring them .

To make a blanket statement that True Value only has cheap junk is insulting . Maybe your True Value isnt the best store , but the majority of our 5500 indvidually owned stores have good product and GREAT service .

Back on topic , I hate to see this store closing after all these years . I wonder if they ever considered updating to remain competitive ? When the big boxes come into a market things change and if you dont react to it you stand a good chance of closing .

I will be going to Pittsburgh this weekend to visit friends for the Thanksgiving holiday.
Does anybody know if T&T Hardware would be open either Friday, Saturday or Sunday?

It's sad to see a store lilke that close. We have a store similar to that close by, but not as large. They also do a lot of HVAC and well/plumbing work too. They are also the local dealer for Stihl, I buy all my stihl stuff there. It's nice to still have a small time hardware close by.

I'll also be in pittsburgh visiting my folks for Thanksgiving this weekend, and we're planning on taking a trip down there. My father grew up in that area of pittsburgh. As I wander the store, I'll whisper "garage journal, garage journal, garage journal".. people will either think I'm crazy or immediately recognize what I'm saying
