Planning Stages ~ Doors

Hey guys, I really need some advice, I don't
want my doors to block my lighting, so I am
looking into roll ups. Would I be fine with a
10' wide, or do I really need 12' wide ???

*Doors will be 12' tall based on current and
potentially future need and/or requirements

I plan to have 1 of my bays really long so I
can come home from Truck shows and just
pull/back in completely hooked up for night.

*Currently own Aluminum open style Car
Hauler, but eventually going to enclosed.

Why would a garage block the lighting...you're not suppose to light the roof of the car to work on but the side no?

look at Plantronics designs in the fixture thread.


you can a centered light a bit in front of where the car would be to work on (normally a car get in forward in the bay) but close to the door is pretty useless.

The wider you can: GO.
I choose 9' on mine, should'ved have went 10' but I was limited and wanted then symetric :|

If money in not in question, go with 12 foot doors. Lot less oops come into play with wider doors. Neighbor has hit the side purlins on his 10 foot opening, 3 bay shop a bunch of times. Always says he wished he would have gone with wider doors.

Pulling my F250 with the towing mirror feels tight on a 10' door where I park. If you can wing it, I'd do 12'.

I agree with maxpat82, check out Platonic Solid in the electrical/lighting section. He did a lighting plan for me for very cheap in my opinion. No guessing if there will be enough...its engineered.

I had a Bud with 10 wide and it always felt tight. Especially with a pickup. If you are backing trailers in its wayyyyy too small. We like to put the items, the cars op drawings but a working used building is for people,, and stuff. You can have a car parked half way in and still walk past it. Backing a truck and enclosed in to needs all the help it can get.

Hang some lights from the bottom of the door track. You would only lose inches of headroom.

Look into a DIY door build.
Do a you tube search on "hanger doors"
Many different styles.

Airplane owners need big, cheap, doors.

Add as many windows in your garage doors as possible.
I was able to install 2 rows of windows.

Thanks for advice, staying with 12's, Got to be rollups,
std type overhead doors kill the look I want to achieve.
