Plano box storage racks ?

but wondering what else is out there or if anyone had tried these ?
I keep all sorts of stuff in these box's from rivet nut toll and supplies, to shrink wrap assortments, to specialized wiring tool and crimps for british cars, to stainless hardware assortments, canvass grommet tool and grommet's etc.
You get the picture, stacks of these boxes on my bench and around the shop. I loose to much time trying to find the right box or moving them around so i have a work surface.

I use a lot of Plano boxes too and store most of them in an old metal cabinet I had. I'm slowly "memorizing" what's in each #'d box. In the meantime I'm using an Excel worksheet as a reminder.

a few years ago, I got some thing like them at walmart in their fishing dept. I mounted them under one of the seats and put tackle in the cases, they worked out real well...Rich

I tried those red plastic racks and was not impressed at all. Currently I’m leaning toward making some racks or using letter trays. I’ve seen some nice steel letter trays that would work great but cost too much.

I picked some Ikea ones for $15 which are pretty thin. I think they will be ok for most fasteners, but they are a little flimsy. On the plus side, the trays slide out so that’s cool.

Also, Home Depot has a black box which is portable and stackable for the 14” version which is pretty cool. Nothing for 11” though.

Lastly, Husky had a bag that would hold up to 14” trays and I’m trying that out for my electrical stuff with 11" trays.

I do like the trays, please keep the storage ideas coming!

You can make your own frame with angle iron to support each individual case. There was a member here who did that, but I can't remember who.

I've got three of those. Only they are grey. I've had them over ten years. Most of the trays are half to totally full. They have held up well. Very nice for the price. Metal trays or racks would last longer, but they are very nice for the price.

I grabbed this photo from this site some time ago. Sorry, I have no idea who it belongs to. Looks like they used plywood for the uprights and 1/4" hardboard for the shelves.

I think I would take the time to build something to fit the area where I was going to store them. Those Plano racks don't look very sturdy, but I maybe wrong, I've never seen them specifically.

I built a cabinet to hold the trays. The end result is ok but really not worth the work involved. Those plastic racks look like a better alternative, or even something like that made of wood.

My issue with the red plastic Plano racks is not sturdiness, they are plenty sturdy for their intended purpose. They lack modularity and intelligent space utilization. They are not stackable. And the racks are just side rails so they only work for 11” boxes.

Better to have a full shelf so you can use for smaller boxes if desired. Just not a very appealing design for something so basic. I prefer the plywood/hardboard rack shown above or a letter tray system with full shelves.

They don’t need to be that strong at all, but they should be designed to handle more than just one specific style of box.

And djjsr, that has to be the nicest looking fastener cabinet I've ever seen, great job!

I'd normally make something but I'm so upside down time wise I'd like to purchase a clean workable solution.

this one fits the 14 inch boxes and says it can mount to peg board. My issue some of my boxes are the deep versions.

My version of the rack - Idea stolen from member on this site, but modified a bit. Drilled plywood sides and shelf pins. Add shelves/bins as needed.

I also have some of the carriers that came with trays bought at Wally World. I think they still carry them in sporting goods. Each carrier holds 4 of the trays. They have a carrying handle so you can take them to a job, etc. They also have slots in the back for hanging. Will try to snap a pic and post up.

I have the older gray version too, have them mounted on the side of a rolling cabinet that has the red plastic trays in it. The tray holders are nice if you have a wall to mount them to, or a shelf the right size to hold them. I don't see not being stackable as a reason to not use them, just screw them to the wall if you want one on top of the other place one above the other with space in between them for another case to fit.

I had a few that were from sets bought from Walmart. I didn't like them because the frames would spread out if the trays were heavy. I just stack the boxes for now. I saw this setup,

and plan to make a similar style rack for the Plano boxes and for Stanley trays that have handles.

Hmm, the 14" HD organizer is less expensive, although it holds only 3 boxes. Still, I like that it has a handle and doors you can close so it's simple to carry it or put it away somewhere if desired. Also I do like the ability to stack and put things on top of it.

Looking at the rack systems, I think I prefer shelves over racks with only side rails. I always end up putting different things in the spaces and shelves allow for that. Racks with rails confine you to something that fits just so and I don't have that kind of discipline.

Even adding a few more basic wall shelves helps to break up the stack... that's probably the direction I will head. Thanks for sharing guys, some good ideas on here as usual!

Looks like the storage box I have is manufactured by Keter - I have 2 of the 4 set organizers for the 11" trays. They also show a setup for the larger 14" trays on their website.

That is my setup.
I have since found deeper containers and made the same
setup for those.
Actually, they are a mixture of masonite and plywood.
I used whatever was laying around in the shop.
The sides are 3/4" plywood, and the backs and slats are 1/4"
So far they have worked out well.

Not "Plano" brand containers, but very similar ones from HF. I made the shelves below. I used smooth high-density fiber board from Lowes for shelves and regular birch plywood for the main shell/frame.

A couple former in-closet cabinets someone was giving away on Craigslist. I painted them and use them for all my small item storage.





They already had adjustable shelving inside when I got them.
