Plastic boxes tools come in, what to do with them?

I've been keeping the boxes the tools come in. I used to store the tools in them but recently got a 72" tool box. All the tools fit in it nicely and I have 6 or 7 boxes that are empty. So what do you do with empty ones? If get rid of them should I save some of them, ie Snap On torque wrench boxes?

I had a thread like this a few weeks back. You'll get the regular smartass answers. Everyone telling you to just throw them away and everything else. Personally I keep my torque wrenches in their boxes just so they don't get bumped around, especially if I need to take them out in the field somewhere. Other than that I bought an oscillating multi tool and cuz some of them to use for storage for other things.


That was a SK box. I have several similar like it. They're fairly sturdy once you cut out the inside. Not all blow molded cases are as stout though. If they're not they could always go to recycling.

Torque wrench cases I'd keep. For me, I keep the wrenches in a tool box drawer, and the cases tucked under the work bench. Easy to grab one and throw the wrench in it if I need to take it somewhere.

As for other blow mold cases, I only really keep ones that I think I may want for mobility in the future. Either by upgrading tools in my main box (and moving the old ones back into their cases and making a mobile kit), or ones that I can easily/quickly pack the item in to use off site if needed. For example, I wish I kept the blow mold case for my craftsman impact sockets, as I've upgraded to a master Sunex set and now use the Cman in my mobile kit (I learned and have the Sunex case stored away, haha).

I recently took a Dewalt box and took the molded layer out and put ratchet straps and bungee cords in it. I keep it in the back of my pickup and the case keeps them dry.

Auctioneer was selling empty tool cases at an auction. He said buy them for entertainment. Drop them along the side of the highway, then watch all the jerks stop on the highway thinking they are getting someone's lost tool....

I keep the tool in the bottom half of the case, in my toolbox. We farm and every once in a while I gotta grab some tools and throw them in the truck to go fix something. Its sure nice to have all the sockets in the lower half of the case, that I can lay on the truck floor...

I just trashed about 25 Snap-On cordless hard carry cases. They're light ,so the extra they cost at the dump wasn't much. They take up room,give no enjoyment,so they're garbage to me.

I actually use 4 of them. 3 are large Dewalt boxes with the guts partially removed to fit the new contents. I used a plastic cutting tip on a soldering gun. One box holds paint brushes, rollers, & other paint related tools. The second holds trowels, taping knives, etc. The third contains sanding blocks & sandpaper, a block plane for windows or doors, surform planes, & so on. I don't do any plaster or paint at work. These house my home patch & paint tools. They are flat sided so they stack well.

The 4th is an old Makita box. I drilled holes & cut away part of the inner lining & added a couple of toggle switches, a pushbutton switch, & wiring with alligator clips to make it into a remote under the hood starter & ignition switch kit. There is also room for a meter & jumpers. It has been a handy setup for many years.

And I have thrown away several others that did not lend themselves to useful purposes.

I've sold several Milwaukee / Dewalt / OTC / etc cases on ebay. Quite a few people list theirs on there for upwards of $20. I let mine go for around half that and every one I've listed has sold. I didn't make much after shipping but it beat throwing them away.

I used a multi tool to cut the dividers out of a Dewalt drill box. It is my junkyard carry box and fits behind the truck seat.

If you ever sell any tools, it really impresses the buyers to have that original plastic case...

I used to just throw them away. Now I wish I had kept them as it helpful with organizing and transporting tools away from you main tool tool storage.

I keep as many as I can I like to keep the tools in the cases some are better than others but it is nice if I need to head to the junkyard or run out into the field to grab a case and go.

I like to keep the good ones and trash the scrap ones. But what I would like most is the LBOXX or Systainer type boxes. So that you can interlock and when you transport on a hand buggy they don't slip off going over rough terrain or stairs

If you think you'll ever sell the tool, keep the case. Toss it up in your rafters/loft whatever (they are about weightless, they'll be OK up there).

I personally get rid of most of them. I kept my dremmel case, because I like the way it displays the bits, and I kept my AC Manifold gauge set case, because it keeps the hoses rolled up nice. But a case that just holds the tool? Like a drill or something? In the drawer it goes, case gets tossed.

I typically buy tools for the long haul, I don't plan on selling any of them. So I can make the executive decisions
