I believe the wrench is the same. It's the rubber. The old was mono red . The new one is a hybrid red/blue on the rubber

Cut the fingers off old leather work gloves. They work pretty decently.

I never throw out old leather, whether it's an old belt or pair of shoes I'll always salvage the leather for reuse. The leather tongue from an old pair of shoes is my go to when I need to prevent marking something when using pliers, water pump pliers etc.

How do you tell the difference between the "old" and the "new" pliers wrench. I'm trying to figure out which model I've got.

The first series of Knipex Pliers Wrench had nickel plating. They've since switched to chrome-3 and black models.

You answered a question I had that was but wasn't really on my need to find out list. I have every size in the Pliers Wrench line and I now I get why there is a mismatch in finishes .....me presuming all were chrome, but just the color ways of it was very different

Nickel looks a lot like chrome with maybe a faint champagne tint to it. It can be really hard to tell from chrome until you put two tools next to each other. Chrome-3 (the newer safer for the worker doing the plating type) is a little bit darker than chrome-6 (now banned in the EU, but still done in the 3rd world). The difference between the older hexavalent chrome plating and the newer that's missing hex chrome is why newer Craftsman socket sets aren't quite as bright as older ones. I don't think a picture on a computer monitor is good enough to tell any of these apart from each other or from polished stainless or even aluminum for that matter, though in person I can easily distinguish them all.

The easiest visual difference to spot is the grooves just above where the grips end. Here's a post about the pliers wrench updates.

Nickel tends to have a yellowish tint.
Chrome has more of a white/blue tint.
