I just bought 2 5’x5’ platens one with square holes, and one with round holes. I will be building stands for them. Have any of you built your platen stands on casters?
Having them on casters would be really nice. But would like to hear some feedback from someone.

What do they weigh.?

If over a ton they may be difficult to roll on casters. 5 x 5 tables lend themselves well to be moved with a pallet jack.

I move this steel 2x8 weld table (just under 2000# ) with a pallet jack.

I decided to put casters under my 5x5 platen. I used some very heavy duty 16" roller bearing wheels on one end and some of the heaviest 6" casters I've ever seen for the other. I put a trough for storing tooling under the platen and placed trailer tongue jacks at each corner so I can level it or raise it up a bit once I have it out where I need it.

I have a really large fab table that I'm able to roll the platen out of the way under it when I don't need it. As long as the floor is clear I can roll it around by myself without too much trouble. I only pull it out for larger projects. A few pics. Ed.

Using a pallet jack is handy. Let’s you move other stuff besides the table. If you move the table and need to level it, you can lift it with the pallet jack and shim under the legs.

Ha! I do like a pallet jack solution as well but anything I can get to roll on my pallet jacks little wheels rolls a whole lot easier on the 16" wheels. I moved my other big table on the same wheels before and it weighed over 7500#.

Once you see the light of the pallet jack, you will want to put everything on it. If you are in the "shop tetris" mode it makes life very easy and the cost of buying many casters will easily outstrip the cost of a used pallet jack.

I love how it takes a few seconds to get a sense of scale in these pictures.

It's kind of hard to get my main shop table in a picture but here are a couple that come close. It has a jib crane on one end with an 8' beam and trolley. I swing well over #1000 at full extension and the table weighs so much it is completely stable. It was a originally a section of portable bridge for crossing a small creek with fully loaded mining trucks. Everything at the far end of the table is actually setting on it too.

I rolled it in on the same 16" wheels and casters after putting the jib crane together outside where I could lift it high enough. I took the wheels off several years ago though because I never plan to move this table again. I still have the big wheels and heavy casters on the smaller work table in the 3rd pic. It also has a small crane on it that can handle a full barrel at about 6' out from the table. Ed.

A pallet jack is just wheels or casters with a handle. If you can move it with a pallet jacket you can move it on casters. With weight it is important to get good casters rated at the load. They generally are not cheap. Thrust bearings in the collars and ball bearings wheel will make a 2-3 ton machine feel like nothing on a flat smooth floor.

I love having things on wheels so pretty much any equipment that can be on wheels will be.

A pallet jack may be more economical if you have lots of things to move or the equipment needs to be grounded when in operation. however, it also takes up real estate 100% of the time even when it is not being used. For a single piece of equipment castors make more sense.

Agree up to the point where it has to be solid and not move once relocated. Having stationary feet at all 4 corners is much better than having 4 swivels, even if they are braked. Of course there are setups which jack the casters off the floor but those are usually a knee grinder with an adjustable wrench.

The hot setup would be to integrate the pump-up hydraulics into the table to jack the casters into and out of the support path

+2 on pallet jack. In my old shop I needed everything on casters because I had to move tools in and out to be able to work on projects and had no extra space to store a pallet jack. Now that I have a bigger shop everything is being converted or built to be able to move with my pallet jack.

Took your advise and went the pallet jack route. So glad I did. Table and stand combo is 2,900 pounds. Moves around effortlessly.

Cleaning up the second platen now. Probably have it home next week.
