If you like hanging out at pawn shops, there are deals to be had. Personally, I don't enjoy it, and I don't buy stuff just because it's a good deal. For me, it really isn't worth it to hit pawn shops. Even if I knew that ratchet was a available at that price, I probably wouldn't even bother making the trip.

That is a good score though!

That'd be priced at full Snappy truck retail in this area. And if you attempt to negotiate a more logical price, they'll inform you it's Snappy and worth more than gold. lol

But sheesh, nice score. Whoever priced that at $2.50 is a *****. At the pawn shop near me, the prices are stupid high. They have a 40 piece set of crappy Ryobi drill bits priced at $49.99. It's been there for years -- I get a chuckle when I see it. You can buy it brand new at HD for $9.99. And the bits are even worn out.

For me, snapon is diamonds, craftsman is gold, and Pittsburgh is silver. I was at the flea markrt this weekend and saw a guy selling tools from a pile and spotted a deep 1 1/8 12pt Cman socket that the guy wanted $15 for at first. His friend translating to english was telling me "its craftsman you know its really good".

Theyre the same people that sell rusty and damaged snapon sockets for $5 a piece because its stamped "snapon" while at the same time the williams, proto, and other equivalent brands sell for $1 or less.

I bought only 1 thing from a pawnshop but i go to a couple once every few months to only get a big chuckle at them selling things like a bare B&D 18v drill for $25 when I can go to walmart to get a drill with 2 batteries for 45 or even the same thing at the sears outlet for 30! I stopped going to one pawnshop in particular when I was picking through a box of sockets for 50 cents each and when i brought up about 20 cman sockets they said they were actually a dollar since they were craftsman.

And dont get me started on those estate sale buisinesses that practically insult you with their tool prices like a bag of rusty wrenches for 50. Oh but theyll be 50% off at 1pm!

There's only one pawn shop in my area that sells tools, and the prices are typically very high. Chinese tools priced as high as you can go buy them for new, common Craftsman USA stuff priced way higher than it sold for new for decades, etc.

But for whatever reason, this nearly mint SK 43875 was only $6 there. Better deal than a $30 Craftsman RP ratchet, I'd say.

It never hurts to stop in and look.

I have at least one within driving distance that I had some similar experiences to what is listed above. New chrome craftsman wrenches $3-$5 each, Basket right next to it full of Proto, Blackhawk, etc. $1 each. I walked out with 10 for $8. Their other prices appeared to be all over the board. My general rule at pawnshops is to only go in with as much cash as I'm willing to spend that day. If there is something that costs more, I'll go back the next day.

I know not everyone is a fan of pawn shops, but my dad owned one for awhile, so I'm kind of partial to them, and I know where to look for the good deals (watch for crates full of stuff on the floors, under shelves, stuff that's been there awhile, etc). I can also usually tell when they are trying to swindle me, and I'm comfortable walking away.

Ultimately, good deals can be had, but you have to be a bit of an opportunist.

I picked up a set of like-new Wrightgrips (Set 711) one time for $35. From the same store I also picked up a Cornwell 1/2" impact wrench for $25 that I think was supposed to be marked $250 (it was worth $100-150). I always try to buy a few things for a bundle price and let them know I'm paying with cash. After a few trips I've learned which stores are better than others.

The best deals I have found are on less common brand names or rare oddball tools that are worth more than they should be. Still, I have found plenty of deals on Snap On and Craftsman.

Pricing almost never makes sense. There's lots of video games and necklaces and garbage around here. Generators are usually priced more than new. Hand tools it's a crapshoot. Cds are usually 50 cents. Cassettes are like ten bucks ? WTF ? I mean seriously.

I think I know the one. I've made a couple of reasonable offers on it, but still it sits. I believe they've had it at least a couple of years. For the same price at that same shop I got my Armstrong 1/2" torque wrench in nearly new condition.

TorKe where is the tool Mecca pawnshop?

His lips are sealed. ;) Years ago I spent my lunch hour at pawn shops, and had several that gave me good deals. One shop had a guy who would hide the Snap-on until he had the money to buy. He took them to the warehouse and warrantied them and sold them at a flea market. He wanted a Snap-on 3/4" drive ratchet head with 36" handle. To piss him off my friend sold it to me for $5.

There is one near me that also prices Snap-on, Matco, Mac, etc fairly high. But they don't do so on other USA made stuff.

They have a bin of wrenches that sell for $1-$3 each, buy 2, get one free. I can usually walk out with 12-15 USA Craftsman, SK, the occasional Bonney, Williams, Proto, etc.for around $20.

They also have a separate bin of large sizes. Anything priced $10 and up is 30% off. I got 10-12 wrenches in the 1 to 1 1/2 inch range for about $100...all USA Williams and Proto Professional.

But, they also have about a bazillion Chinese ones that you have to dig through to find the good ones.

No Snap-on ratchets, but I did get two nice black Protos for $5 each and a nice Estwing framing hammer for $4 once.

I have checked most on the NE side of town, but never found any deals like that!

Pawn shops will also put back good tools to sell to tool jockeys who are regular customers.

Oh, on the SK swivel ratchet, Gerard, I will give you YOU **** award. This from someone who owns one of those ratchets that I bought new and have happily used it. I think SK no longer makes that model.
