Hello GJ!

My friend began mentoring a Cincinnati, OH high school level robotics program recently, and they are trying to help these students get this program up and running. Just like all other schools right now, they don’t have the budget for many tools for the program.

That’s where GJ can help!!

They are now looking to take the next step and the school is reaching out to get some dontated tools for the kids to be able to build their robots........

Do you know, or know anyone with some old machine shop tools, hand tools, etc. that they're willing to donate or get rid of cheaply?

Specifically:
band saws
drill presses
drills
any hand tools (screw drivers, sockets/wrenches, ratchets, etc)
tap sets
bench vise(s)
miter saws

Additionally, extra funds are always welcomed (AND tax deductible!), and if you'd like to contribute that would be great too!

It would be great if you would ship, but they can probably take care of shipping.......

Please contact Andy @ [email protected]

Or, if it's easier, you can send me a PM and I will reach out to the right person at the school.

Here's the craigslist ad they've posted:
http://cincinnati.craigslist.org/wan/2754258667.html

This is where organization that the school will be competing in --> http://www.usfirst.org/roboticsprograms

Any tools will help these kids, and we thank you in advance for any help that you can give!

God bless, and Happy Holidays!

Awesome!
Great start...

All... hello! My name is Gordon - first post... yatta yatta.. Woo! :bounce:
I'm the fellow buddy of bmwohio, and the Mentor for the group -

Johnnybentwrench - Just curious, can you give us an idea of what you're sending?

Real quick - We're going to have anything in the nearish future sent to my personal office - The kiddos are about to head out for Christmas break, and shipping receiving becomes a bit of a hassle when nobody is at the school.

I'll shoot you a PM with the address!

Thanks again mate! Cheers!

BMWOHIO,

Great to see that you brought your request here. I had a friend like yours that at the time was getting a robotic program going at several of our local HS. I felt drug into helping him out but found out very quickly that I really enjoyed helping out these kids. This was many years ago but these kids really did some cool stuff.

Other things that may be needed if you don't already have them were:
soldering irons
electronic parts old cpu components
we used some old commador and atari parts (yeah this was a while ago)
wire
connectors
wire strippers/crimpers
riviting tools/rivits
self taping screws (hex head)
thin wall Aluminum angle and flat stock
small brackets, hinges, pulleys etc.

These are the items we seemed to use all the time.
I will dig around and ship what I have left.
Post some pictures of their work if you get a chance.

Great thoughts!
These are all definitely things that could come in handy with robot fab!

I'll do what I can to keep some current pictures up here... perhaps some pics of the team etc.

I have a lot of computers and parts. I use to build and repair them until I was hurt and now disabled. I still do mechanicle and want/need to do wood work to keep from fading away. So, are you interested? I can't afford shipping and am sorry for that.

Thanks, JASTECH

Not tool related, but I you wanted a field trip you might be able to get the EOD (bomb squad) unit at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton to show you their robots. They have maybe 5 different types and sizes from 10lbs to maybe 2000lbs.

I'm now in my 11th year on a FIRST Robotics team. While I don't have any surplus tools to send, I'd be glad to answer any questions he may have.

FIRST Robotics is an excellent program to support. Think of it as the modern-day shop class. Best of luck to the team in the games!

I'll have to pass the word on! Do you have any idea if this is something that they'd be able to mobilize? (Head TO the school?) or would it be an experience that would involve getting the kiddos to Dayton?

Rock on! We'll keep you on tap for any of those odd-ball questions!

I'll ask the club leader/teacher if he's got any use for PCs - This is one thing I'm not 100% sure about... :dunno: I'll get back to you on that one!

I think it would be best if they went to the base. You'd have to talk to the EOD shop before anything though, so I can't speak for them. Who knows, maybe some of the kids will find a new career.

Think you can email Andy at the above email address?

He says as long as they can run autodesk software or the programming software they'll be using (which I don't know what it is off hand) then they're all on board with the deal.

Thanks again!

Ed_EOD - Any ideas how we would go about setting up a meeting or tour or whatever? We'd love to get some more information about what this may entail..
