Hello,

I am looking at purchasing this blackhawk, and could use some help with a positive ID. The tag says S 18, and has a 2 perhaps showing capacity. The only S18s I am aware of are the cool fendered one. The rest of the jack looks more like an S4, but after looking at many pictures on this great forum I can't be sure that its an S4. I believe the underside is designed differently as well as bolt locations on the sides seem to be in the wrong locations for an S4.

The light and therefore the id tag may not be original, since when found the light was on backwards. So my first thought was the light had been sourced from another type of jack, but too my knowledge (as little as it may be) the S 18 did not have a light.

I will be having the jack shipped so I had the owner weigh it, and it only weighs 103lbs, and I was under the impression that the S4 weighed between 150lbs and 200lbs.

I appreciate any and all help,

Billy

I believe it's a S18, which shares internals witha few other blackhawk models. I think your thinking of a SJ18 which has the fenders etc... Maybe GJ member CRTDI or Bull will clarify.

Definitely not an S4. S4s have the two stage pump for one, and a much longer chassis. Probably does weigh close to 200 lbs.

Thanks for the quick replies. I did not realize there was an S18 and SJ18. I may get it anyway as it is a very cool jack, but if anyone has an S4 they want to sell let me know. I want the higher capacity for my '96 Land Cruiser.

I'm not afraid of shipping either, and I would rather have a resto project as well as long as hard parts are in good condition.

Thanks again,

Billy

I've got an S4 that is currently doing great service as a cat-hair collector under the stairs in my barn. Those hard parts are the Achilles Heel. I bought a bunch of new and some used parts, then had a different part of the u-joint linkage break on me. It's a shame, because the jack is fun to use. I hope one day to find a machinist willing to make me some new, strong parts so I don't have to rely on brittle old stockers. That, or finding someone to just buy the damn thing.

Bull, I don't know what part of MA you're in, but there is a great machinist in Cape Cod by the name of Keith Fenner. His shop is called Turn Wright Machine Works. I watch his videos on youtube (one of the only decent things on there). If I had a part that needed work and it could be shipped or I lived closer I wouldn't have a problem having him take care of it if it were in my budget.

See below an ad for the BH S18 that appeared here on GJ posted by another member some time ago. At that price I want a dozen, at least.:eyecrazy:

Oh well, I will have to look around some more, which is fun in itself.

Thank you to all for making this forum so useful and friendly.

I'm not going for the S18 so if anyone is interested it is in North Las Vegas.

http://lasvegas.craigslist.org/pts/3527716431.html

The gentleman that owns it is real friendly and wasn't going to charge extra for crating and carrying to any close shipping terminal of my choice.

He got the jack out of a storage unit he bought, so is not the original owner or really interested in the jack, so if your closer you may be able to negotiate. I was fine with the price as I haven't ever seen an old Blackhawk around here, and of course I thought it was probably an S4.

Thanks again,

Billy
