An idea that I read about a while ago was to cord your old 12-14 volt battery powered drill and hook it to a car battery to keep it useful after the original battery craps out and is too expensive to replace.

I like the idea of replacing the cells in the battery case, I have a 20 year old B&D drill that I like, but the batteries are dead. I may order up some cells and rebuild that batteries my self.

Milwaukee owns the paton rights to the Lithum Ion battery. They have already won a law sute and are going for more. So I don't know what you will see coming up for Li-ion stuff. If companys keep making them they will have to pay right to Milwaukee....

That doesn't appear to be true. Milwaukee doesn't hold a patent on LI technology in total. They have patents on their battery technology relating to batteries rated above or equal to 20amp among other patents.

They did sue Hitachi in Oct and settled with Makita over alleged patent infringements, but no details were disclosed.

What I see are many drills using LI technology. I have yet to find any licensing agreements between Milwaukee and other power tools makers.

I did find Makita has patents on their LI batterys as well.

Whatever you pick consider the "reconditioned" tools from CPO. I have purchased many items from them and they are top notch, and great bargains.

This man speaks the truth! I have bought Many Many items from them and been extremely happy.

Actually just got a NEW Ridgid 18v LiIon Autoshift drill from them a couple weeks back for only $129.

They are getting better about deals for existing customers too, so buy something small to start with perhaps and then reap the benefits of being a 'customer'.
