I'm looking to impress my mother in law with laying some stones on the sides of the driveway. I cut out the sides because they were cracking bad. And I dug out and cleaned the space where the stones should go.

If anyone could help me out with the next step I would be eternally grateful. Is the next step putting down limestone?

1. Should I pack the ground before the stone goes in? There is limestone there that is pretty solid from when the driveway was on it. Any advice?

How much limestone do I put in? Also, I noticed on my neighbours driveway that the stones are sloped. How do I do this?

Any input is appreciated so much. Thanks so much.

Pre- compaction is always a good thing, use enough limestone, we call baserock in the west, to make the stones flush with the driveway, if you want slope then slope the limestone, mix water the stone enough to make it stick together but not make it mushy, put water on the existing stone before adding ne stone to it so the new stone won't have abdry layer between. Use a ******** compactor plate, once the stones are laid you want back the outer edge with soil or stone depending how you want it to look, that also needs compacting. Put sand over the stones and sweep into the cracks and water it in as well, keep adding more until the cracks or grooves are full. This should get you started.

Thanks aircommuter!

One question. How to I keep a slope consistent throughout the whole length of the driveway ?

Thanks again for your input.

the most important thing you can do is dig down and make sure there is no top soil or other organic material under the base you put down. if there is, in 5 years everything will move. for something that will get driven on I would go with no less than 8" of compacted base. I would also prep your base 1/4" low to leave room for some sand under your pavers so that you can screet out the sand flat sp that you just have to drop in your stone. finally when your done sweep some polymeric sand into the joints and wet it down to lock everything together.
