I have really been liking Kroil lately.

Maybe it is just the flavor of the month.

The interior of my pickup smells like Kroil and fast food.

Acetone and atf may get the job done, but acetone is some nasty stuff. Avoid flames and inhalation/skin contact if you can.

I wouldn't get too worried about it. Acetone is all that most women folk I know use for nail polish remover and taking scuff marks off of shoes.

This has been discussed here before in the past but it may have been awhile. Look at this:

Penetrating oil comparisons

For all of you that are mechanically inclined..... Penetrating Oils Compared A study done by Machinist's Workshop magazine in their April 2007 issue looked at different penetrating oils to see which one did the best job of removing a rusted bolt by measuring the pounds of torque required to loosen the bolt once treated. If the study was scientifically accurate, it turns out a home brew works best! Here's the summary of the test results:

Penetrating oil .......... Average load

None ..................... 516 pounds

WD-40 .................... 238 pounds

PB Blaster ............... 214 pounds

Liquid Wrench ............ 127 pounds

Kano Kroil ............... 106 pounds

ATF-Acetone mix.............53 pounds

The Automatic Transmission fluid (ATF)-Acetone mix was a "home brew" mix of 50 - 50 automatic transmission fluid and acetone. Note the "home brew" was better than any commercial product in this one particular test. A local machinist group mixed up a batch and all now use it with equally good results. Note also that "Liquid Wrench" is about as good as "Kroil" for about 20% of the price.

I've used the ATF-Acetone mix and can say it worked when heat, WD-40 (no surprise) and breaker bars didn't. It's readily available, cheap and you just mix up enough for what you need. Why pay $$$ and have to internet order something else?

Thanks for providing this 67Carl. While it may not be 100% scientific, it's much more scientific than most comparisons where one guy says this worked or the others says that didn't work.

To add another opinion, one of my buddies swears by this stuff. Good to see it rated well on the "scientific" list:

I've used PB Blaster for the past 20 years because it was readily available. Within the past 2-3 years I started using Liquid Wrench. It's 100x better than PB Blaster. It also has a smell, but it's almost minty to me. Not a big deal.

I'd like to try Kroil, but Liquid Wrench has been fantastic and it's available everywhere.

I like the smell.

A good penetrant is ATF mixed with acetone. I have it in a spray bottle. Shake and spray...

This. Works better than Kroil, Blaster and the others I've tried.

I use to buy Kroil in the gallon containers, so I've used it quite a bit.

ATF/Acetone mix works better.

I really like Kroil, but the stuff is pretty spendy. Right now I'm using Rubachem Loosey Goosey II. Seems to work pretty good.

If i need to protect tools or metal from rusting, I use Sprayon LU-711. Leaves a film that protects the surface for a long time.

I only just heard of Inox a few days ago when talking to some people about what they use to lubricate locks.
I will probably have to get a can myself!
