Sorry for long message, but I want to answer everyone's possible questions to get a better answer.

Hi everyone I just discovered in my rented house that I have a dedicated 240v wire with a 20-amp 2-pole breaker at the main panel. When I moved in, I thought it was dead since the line was cut. But it has a reading of 244v with a Klein MM100 in the garage which is 50 feet from the main panel. It was wired to an unused 25-amp sprinkler pump timer and I would like to use it for a compressor.

By using a measuring tape it's definitely bigger than 1/16", but less than 1/8" so I am guessing 12-3. I also calculated that a #12 can carry 9.3-amps x2 for 50' using a couple of sites posted in GJ.

The wire coming from the main panel has a black/white/ground and the blue/red are part of the timer. The bare copper of the black wire can be seen in front of the blue wire on the right.

So I ask the GJ community, what's the biggest and strongest compressor you think will run safely. Due to my shaking hands, my neighbor will be using it the most. It will be for auto body tools and a small sandblast cabinet. BTW, the landlord won't let me do any additional wiring even with an electrician?
Wife thinks I'm nuts - what's new? :lol_hitti
Thanks

Here's is couple of pics.

My neighbor suggested getting a 60 or 80 gallon 125-150psi compressor. Since some run on only 15 amps, is it possible or should I get something else?

The number of amps and voltage gives you the max true horsepower that the circuit will support. Per http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/electrical-motor-calculator-d_832.html the most you can run is a 5 HP motor, and that disregards the need to overrate the circuit to account for any start up surge.

I run a true 5 HP motor on a 30A circuit, and some would say that's pushing the limits, but I've had no problems with it. Cutting it down by a 1/3rd, I dunno. I'm a little skeptical about the 12 ga. wiring too. IIRC the motor plate on mine shows a 22.5 amp draw.

I hope that helps, and yeah, this is a nice website, thanks for noticing.

FWIW the attachment is a screen shot of electrical requirements from a Champion manual, to give you an idea what compressor manufacturers recommend for wiring.
