Thanks for this post. I have nothing to offer on trash cans, but my wife just walked by and said, "What do you DO on that site?" I told her we were discussing the best trash cans. Perfectly sensible topic to me. She just walks by shaking her head!
:bounce:

Instead of trash cans I use trash compactors.......they consolidate and make a nice cube. Plus, I have one in the shop and the house....the fun is seeing just how flat i can make something.......really crushes cans and bottles.... You can probably get at least 30 or 40 lbs in one bag.
It's probably not an alternative for everyone since compactors are quite expensive, but I TOTALLY agree with you. I happen to have one I got for $50 from a friend. We use it in the house and really only have to take a bag of garbage out every 2-3 weeks. When we do take it out, yeah, it's 40 lbs of garbage but it's frickin' cool!

Picked up a hint somewhere about garbage cans & liners.

Punch a couple of holes in the side of the can with a hole saw. Put them about an inch from the bottom to contain any leaks.
Put a new liner in the can and the first time you dump something in the can, the air trapped inside won't try to pop the bag loose from the lip. When its time to pull the bag out, no vacuum & it slips right out.

i dont see how anyone can spend $40+ on a can to hold garbage when these are everywhere, free, way more durable than anything plastic, and last forever. i have 3 in my shop
Steel drums do OK inside but rust out within a year outside. Around here they actually cost $$$. Plastic drums are great for trash. I got one of those for free.

Hey y'all, I know you have been on pins and needles waiting, waiting, waiting for an update from me. Well, I said I would post some photos, and that always slows me down. Plus I recently revived an old desktop computer so I was busy with that, and am now using it to post the update.

When we left the story, I was going to stop at Home Depot to check out the competition. oooohhh. They have a different selection from Lowes, a bit more extensive and heavily populated by the "Rubbermaid" products. And just like Goldi Locks I would'nt settle until it was juuust right. 15 minutes of rolling various cans around, I left the building and back on the road again!

I remembered that closer to home was a "Do It" Hardware Center (its an Ohio thing). Low and behold, there was the exact can I was trying to replace, but somehow not exactly the same. I was getting tired of questing at this point, so I pulled the pin and bought two cans, $72.00 and some change.

I still had my mulch / gravel Snow weight in the bed of the truck, so my Toneau cover would not close all the way and had to rest on one of the cans. My cover is pretty light weight at around 50-60 pounds. Once I got home I was second guessing my purchase.

PictureProjects008.jpg

Can getting smashed.

PictureProjects009.jpg

Permanent deformation already !!

I did like the changes they made to the handle, reinforcing it with a metal strap and two washers. A broken handle is why I was looking for a replacement, and holes in the bottom that occasionally leak goo out the bottom.

PictureProjects010.jpg

The new cans were obviously thinner, flimsier and cheaper made. So I dug out my dial calipers to measure the difference.

PictureProjects013.jpg

PictureProjects014.jpg

Old can, 0.125 thick (1/8 in.)

PictureProjects015.jpg

New can 0.070 , almost half the thickness.

So, I pushed the dent out of the new can and promptly returned them the next morning for a full refund. I then made some repairs to my old handle, using their modification and the old cans are back in service for now. I will continue to look.

What can Rubbermaid learn from this? We don't want to buy Junk! Make a quality product and charge a fair price for it. Last time I looked, Rubbermaid sells other things besides garbage cans. I will probably scrutinize your stuff much more closely before choosing your products. Whereas if you continued to make a quality garbage can, like the old ones that have lasted me 15 years, I would consider it a brand I could count on. Why can't manufacturers figure that one out?

Rant over...

JackFre, I had to laugh out loud when I read your reply, ha, ha. Thanks for that!

Breeze, I read your "battle of the cans" post and will show you my "can"

paintproject027.jpg

I painted my car this past summer and needed some test panels, and the can was one of the victims. Flat red pearl with panels and candy fades. Check out the post on the HAMB to see other victims from the gahraj and the car.

http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=539437

Folks, please continue to add your sugegstions, as I will need new cans eventually.

Thanks!

if your garage is a car guy garage I recommend stopping by your local oil change shop and asking for an empty 120# grease keg, they work perfect for the trash can and they look very cool with your favorite oil company logo. I have a few and have never paid for one

what are the dimensions on one of those kegs? I have a rather plain trash can in the garage, and this sounds interesting. what size bag does it take? thanks.

I do my own oil changes but take the company truck to a local oil change place. I was there Friday and asked about the grease cans. The manager said the vendor (Valvoline) recyles them and he has to account for everyone.

We have a barrel supplier next to our shop and I get the 30 gal blue plastic drums from them for $20. each and they work great. The 55 gal seem to get heavy and hard to dump for one person to handle

I'm not sure what surprises me most, the fact that someone has actually gone on-line to ask this question or the fact that the thread has reached 3 pages!

Some of you guys have either too much money or too much time, or if you're really lucky - BOTH!

Believe it or not, WallyWorld had some real nice heavy cans that I looked at when we needed some new ones. Round, black, heavy wall, and made in Ohio out of recycled material. They didn't have any damn lids to go with them. They were sold out :wtf: Who the heck buys lids and no cans? So I had to settle on the Rubbermaids, which I noticed right off were cheaper than they used to be. I bit the bullet, bought a couple, but when I get to Wally again, will look for the Ohio made ones WITH lids then get them

The trash truck operators sometimes dump the lid into the truck along with the trash. Then people need new ones. I have also seen a person stop and steal a trash can lid.

Bazz, we are simple folk here on the Garage Journal. It is surprising what I learn and... What I am not afraid to ask, cuz I may look stupid. So, new cans will probably cost just shy of $100 and who thinks of this stuff besides me?
I need something that will look nice outside, in plain view of the neighbors. I hope for my hard earned cash to get something worth a damn.

Yea, I'm surprised it made three pages too! Ha, ha.

Reason being is, trash cans are one of the most used items on a day to day biases that i have. I was looking at this thread with interest, (worse things out there!) I had just had the trashman haul off my old Rubbermaid cans, as the bottom wore out after 5 years or so. My new Rubermaid ones lasted less than 6 month without cracking. They are thin, brittle and not worth half what I paid for them. This is useful money saving information:thumbup: But it is kinda funny:bounce: I will be concerned if we have a three page thread on paper towels, however. I need a life......

Just got off the phone with Rubbermaid. They are going to send me a replacement product. They did state that they require a receipt or a label that was on the can, neither of which I have. A nice lady named Wanda said that they can replace it out of courtesy one time, and will do so. I did mention this site and thread as well..

My city collects trash for free, I pay taxes so not really free, but they require you to use either their provided 40 gallong roller, or a compatable one that their truck can pick up. I got my own.

PaverProject1019.jpg

The city supplied the blue recycle container.

I got my own before I knew they gave them free.

Still, good can for $60.

Jim....Are you sure they pick it up for free? I know that a lot of people that live within the corporation limits of a town and are hooked to sewer and water, the trash fees are added in with those two, so it's kind of hidden in the fees. I think they do it so they can raise one or the other and no one really pays attention to actually what gets raised. My parents fees were set up that way, and on top of that, the sewer fee was dependent on how much water was used, whether the water went down the sewer pipe or it was used to wash a car. Our town charges for a recycling fee whether you choose to use it or not. If you don't use it, you still pay.

Sure glad I live out of town!!

Yeah, the city does the collecting, not a private company.

I'm sure my taxes pay for it, they are pretty high, about $4000 a year for my $600K house.

I was all set to buy one of the Behrens 31 gal steel trash cans at Lowes today, but they only had two and they were stacked. Apparently, they stick together so bad when stacked that even when an employee and I (two large men) both took ahold of either can, we couldn't pull them apart. We gave up and I asked him if he'd sell me a 32 gal Brute at the price of the Behrens instead (Brute was $5 more). He agreed, so I got the Brute for $24.99. I'm kind of bummed about not getting the metal can, but I guess I can live with it. The can is just for my garage trash.

I guess the moral of my story is not to stack the metal cans. lol

By the way, I have a Behrens 6 gal pail with lid that I use for my charcoal grill ash. I like it, but the lid sticks tight.

You all have been patient while I made up my mind. Yes, it's been two years since I made this post and I finally made a choice! I haven't just been dragging my feet. I have been diligently looking, causing my wife on occasion to say "what took you so long?" as I looked once again at Lowes, Home Depot, Menards, Tractor Supply, Ace Hardware and any other place that sold cans.

In the meantime the original thread has been a numbers generator for most views of all my original "How to" postings with 8900+ views as of today. I guess everyone does want and need nice garbage cans.

So, what did I get????

DSCN0054_zps7c6bb543.jpg

At Lowes, Made in the USA. $39.00, I bought only one initially to see how I liked it. The plastic is thick and has some structure so it doesn't dent easily by hand. It is also fairly light weight.

DSCN0053_zps72154051.jpg

Slightly larger than the old Rubbermade, and the lid is more rounded. It is almost impossible to set something on top or work off of the lid of the can like I could with the old ones.

Inside of the old can.

DSCN0058_zps9552f9d6.jpg

Metal reinforced latching handle. just like the Rubbermade's.

DSCN0059_zps6100d610.jpg

Nice and clean and best part, NO HOLES

DSCN0060_zps85385f6d.jpg

One tip if you go out and get some for yourself. When lifting the lid off the can, if you attempt to lift directly under the latching handle in the middle, it will be stuck on requiring two hands and lots of force. If you pick up from one of the corners it glides gently off with one hand.

Finally, I can cross this one off the list. If it turns out to be a dud, I will follow up with that.

Later...

I think I have the brute one and it's been good in weather as it has sat outside for the past 5 years at my current house.
