Please Review...

I wired up my squirrel cage. The BLUE I left out because I believe it has something to do with a thermostat or speed control (note it goes in with the two wires from the solenoid or whatever that thing is)... I grounded to the motor body with the existing factory ground. I put the white to the 'ribbed' wire on my new cord.... I put the BLACK and RED together with the remaining 'smooth' wire and the motor started to blow... HOWEVER - after running a couple of minutes it began to have an electrical burning smell. The wires were NOT hot and I have it plugged into a trip and a GFCI. The Motor was hot to the touch. Hotter than you would want to feel for more than a second.

Am I doing something wrong...

It is old and it has at one point been in a wheel barrel full of water... Lube perhaps???

When motors get older I was under the impression the brushes and or field winding insulation can break down. I may be wrong but an old guy told me the armetures can get groved badly and it also affects the performance. There is also the off chance you may be doing something wrong.

There is no OFF CHANCE when it comes to me and electrical work... there is only a 50/50 chance~!

I've been running it for about 5min now - we'll see...

The body hasn't shocked me so I may be at 60/40 now... I have an extinguisher handy...

Okay it just shut off and it's smoking... so far so good!

At least I know it can think for itself instead of just igniting...

Just plugged it in 20min later and it its blowing again... I'm stumped. I don't think it would work at all if it was wired wrong... Maybe it's just old...

The whatchacallit is a capacitor.IT basically stores a charge of current and can shock you a good one even when the power is unhooked. IT has several functions one is to assist the motor on startup and another is becuse ac alternates from 0 to 120v 60 times per second it pulses to help the motor run smoothly.I'm not an E.E, maybe one lurks here and could better elaborate .Need to know if this blower is stand alone or for a furnace or whatnot.

have same experiance as me huh ? my dad was fixing something i forget what and told me to hand him the (object) on bench well i got a surprise and about jumped out of my skin

10-4 ! I use to be a machine mech. and I would TORTURE anybody I could by having them check the terminals to see if they were loose.: GREAT ENTERTAINMENT.. I used to be an Ornery *******. My post above is a very brief and basic explination and capacitors are used in alot of different applications .I would recomend a local expert opinion over what you get on a forum. Your motor is not configured as is to run properly.

This is a stand alone unit... purchased at a Garage Sale this year. I was told it ran fine YEARS ago.

Ahh... Capacitors. Yes, I know them. I used to be a Lineman Apprentice. The Capacitors we dealt with would burn you clear. Didn't learn a thing about home electrical though...

ok your app is not utilizing the capacitor.However my brain hasn't utilized this info for 20 years either and I don't feel comfortable pulling advice out of the cobwebs.If I remember correctly motor capacitors are either start, run, or dual run.That said wiring requirements could be 1 of 3 maybe more different configurations.Your blower came out of some type of hvac equipment I'm guessing so there may be some dual run wiring required.I'm sure if you research capacitors and figure which type you have you,ll figure how to supply power to your motor correctly. I know the terminals are marked or labeled as to correct orientation I just dont recall much more than that. If ya don't use it ya loose it.......

If you google the motor I think that you'll find that its a three speed furnace motor. Chances are that you only need the red or black but not both to the hot lead. The "thingamagig" is a run or start capacitor, and looks to be internally connected. Try one wire red or black and see what happens.

you have two speeds tied together.use black for high,red for next speed.

Awesome guys... THANK YOU. I'm going to try Red or Black seperate. That explains hearing and up and down hum while running. I will post the results after lunch...

Yeah, I would agree the red is most likely your low speed, black is high speed. The Blue might be a medium speed and by-passes the capacitor. Hopefully you didn't burn the motor up by wiring them together.

Holy Toledo... Just hooked up Black alone (on Christmas Eve...) and that certainly seems to be high speed.

Waiting to see if I get a 'burn' smell.
