Please school me on this Snap On KRL7002 box

I have been looking at getting a new tool box for my garage. I currently have a Mac box but it is really more of a big service cart; I want more drawers to be able to be more organized. I found this Snap On box on Craigslist and it looks to be in good shape. I just wanted to learn a bit more about it before meeting with the seller blindly. My questions:

1) How old are these boxes/what era? I couldn't find much, but one thread said they were the early version of a KRL1022.

2) Are they new enough to have roller bearing drawers and, if so, are there any known problems with them?

3) How deep are they? My garage is just a 1-car, so getting the most of my space is essential, and I would like a very deep box.

4) In your opinion, is this a reasonable price? Boxes seem to be pretty expensive in this area, but I of course don't want to pay too much for it, especially if it is an older box.

The box is about 30 inches deep and the drawers are about 27 inches deep. It's the same as the KRL1001 box without the top layer of drawers. The current comparable model would be the KRL7022. All drawers are ball bearing slides. I'd say it's about a 1997-1999 or there abouts.

The info Wamsutta has provided in both your posts is all accurate. I would add that the box you've linked to is no different than the current "Master's Series" boxes still offered today with the exception of only having one full width drawer and older style exposed spring casters. In the late 90's and early 2000's all of the KRL boxes already had Lock n Roll drawers and ball bearing slides. The box also came with very nice drawer liners.

I have a KRL1001 which was manufactured in 2001. It is nearly identical to the box you are looking at except it is taller by an additional 4" drawer. Both boxes are 29" deep and 54" wide. If you haven't ever checked one of these out you will be amazed at the 27" deep drawers!

BTW..... IMO $1700 is a very fair price for that box if it's in good condition. I would say the average price for a used KRL box of this vintage is between $2000-3000 with some fetching a little more and some that are badly beat going cheaper.

i know they made the KRL 7002 in 2003. I am familiar with the KRL 7003 which is the triple bay version. Sames features as a new box, just different drawer layout.

Dimensions are 29" x 54" x 40" height. Weight is 585 lbs.

Nice boxes with good storage room for 54" box due to drawer depth.
I bought a scruffy black one few years ago for 800 but needed painting outside sides back, top and bottom drawer fronts along with all slides soaked/cleaned for hours .
Came out good but was lot of hours prep, cleaning and final details .
1700 not bad if clean and trim, drawer fronts and slides all good. if little scruffy or needing few parts couple hundred bucks off would be better .
Can't go too far wrong as KRL always sell easy enough and for good money if truly tidy condition .

pics of boxes don't always tell you much bit like cars really, can look good but reality is a shock lol .
If seller seems decent it always worth a look, costs of some refinishing is quite cheap in terms of material besides time involved.
Can get costly or annoying if drawer runners bad or a drawer twisted off line or trim in a mess .
If he open to offers after viewing could be good and give more scope on purchase but if dead fixed on price it would be steep if it scruffy . Worth all down to buyer and what it worth to you and what condition you want a used box in .

Ha! I hadn't even thought about it! I have a small pickup...will that not carry it? As far as getting it in and out, I have one motorcycle ramp, I guess I could buy another. Any suggestions?

Okay, update...I talked to the guy a few minutes ago and I am going to go check it out tomorrow. I asked if it was in real nice shape. He said it was pretty nice, but that it has been a mechanic's tool box and has a few scratches, but nothing big, mostly around the trim on the top. He also said that the drawers all slid smoothly. But, he added, that he noticed that after he emptied the top drawer it didn't slide quite as smoothly. But he said this is common when they do not have weight in them, and that it was good when full.

My main concern is the drawers and whether or not they are nearing the end of their life. How easy and/or difficult are they to replace if needed? Does Snap On offer a service to replace them, and is it expensive? I wouldn't think they would be warrantied after 20 years in a shop. I know there is a lifetime warranty but this would seem more like normal wear and tear. If anyone knows how this works I would love to know. And any other thoughts are welcome

The drawers themselves will almost certainly be fine.

The glides may or may not need to be replaced.

Unlikely all of them would need replaced, but possible. More likely they will be fine or a couple sets need replaced. They are easy to replace.

There are rubber snubs/stops in the back of the glides that can dry up and come apart, usually black but other colors exist. If the drawers feel rough look closely at the glides and you might see little bits of plastic looking crud in there, if so then its the dried out broken up stops.

I bought a krl 1001 a year or so ago and it had this issue. I just blasted the glides out with brake cleaner and blew them dry with air and then lubed them again. I used napa's chain lube as that's what I could get right away and it has worked fine if a little messy at first.

If you have to buy new glides there are around $80 or so a set if I recall correctly. I have read of people getting free replacement glides from Snap on, but I'll leave the moral/legal issues of that for others to discuss.

You could also pull all the glides and clean and lube them really nicely and buy new stops - which are cheap/free, but that would be a fair amount of effort and time compared to what I did, or even just replacing them.

I got my box on a Sat. and it needed to be ready for work Mon. so I didn't have time or inclination for all that.

Few people on here had new slides free on used boxes they bought .
Really depends on luck and account with snapon .
Main reason I got mine cheap was slides rough and 2 drawers hard close once opened when looking at it pre purchase, was purely dirt and grime and fine once cleaned fully.
Main thing check is drawers fit square as if bent out of alignment hard get decent again .
Looking at detents should give idea of usage/wear on slides .
Trimmings want be half decent as not cheap put right, top long drawer top edge was chipped an gouged bad on mine, can get protectors from snapon but they expensive, I done drawer top edges with black carbon film which worked well on black .

I have a 1001 box like that. Great box for storage capacity. It weighs over 600 pounds, and will barely fit between the wheel wells in my full size ford on it's back. I'd strap it in severely if I tried to transport it on its wheels, but it can be done. Pushing it up the ramp into the truck might be a bit hard.

I moved mine recently, has easily a ton or more of tools in it. I used my car hauler, put 3/4" plywood over 2x10's over the car ramps and winched it up onto the trailer. It crunched the plywood up a bit where the wheels rolled over it, but the 2x10's kept it from breaking through. Empty, I think you could easily go up a sheet of plywood over ramps.

I got to thinking about it last night, and determined that I want the old Landcruiser that I have been saving for more than I want a new tool box, so I called the seller and backed out. I may regret it down the road but for now it feels like a wise decision
