Plier Storage

Mine are throw in. The ones I use more often end up on the top so it works out fine.

I don't keep all my pliers in there though. The ones for electrical work are in an "electrical" drawer. My welding clamps are on the welding cart, etc.

I have a few pairs of dikes, couple vice grips, needle nose, water pump pliers, etc... maybe 10-15 pairs of pliers in total. Haven't needed more.

I used a closet rack that i made a few choice cuts on. dont work as well as i would like for it to but with no more than i have it works fine.

I tried those plier-rack setup last week. Didn't like it, it packed them in too tight and I couldn't put my hands on them fast enough..... Plus, I tended to bounce them off the drawer tops pulling them out.

Fubar, PM me if you'd like to trade those out for something. I need a couple more for my cutter/crimper drawer!

How tall is that rack there Sir? Of all the racks this Walmart dish rack looks the most useful!

Its maybe 2-3in tall, I can measure tomorrow. I cut the feet off it so it would sit flush and so i could could one of the more shallow drawers.

I'm thinking to have some leather custom sewn up so it can hold pliers and have these hang by the wall more or less like this.

This is funny. I was reading this thread this morning and my gf ended up organizing my pliers drawer to my new HF 13 drawer box so I had to take some pictures to post specifically for this thread.

I wanted more flexibility in my storage so I built the one below. It is made from 1/2" thick wood (it may be MDF but I am not sure) with #30 holes drilled in the right places to accept the plastic coated wire dividers I bent up. The wire came from WalMart coat hangers that cost $1.20 for 10 of them. I cut up the 10 coat hangers into 4 3/4" long straight pieces and bent them with 1 1/2" legs. The wire stands are spaced 0.7" which seems perfect for nearly any type of pliers. I set up a bending fixture on my drill press (see pic). On the top of the board I put some of that non-slip matt made for tool box drawers.

This solution made a huge improvement in my plier storage. The drawer is only 16" x 16" x 4" high so I didn't have a lot of space for the mess of pliers shown in the picture. I even have a few spots for future purchases.

My chests only have so many drawers deep enough that pliers can be stood on edge and they are used for larger items. Pliers go in shallow drawers and are just laid in there as efficiently as possible.

Then again, I just got my tools put in chests after 30 years so I'm still in the trial and error stage....

I used to do that too. Then I got too many pliers to fit in a thinner drawer and switched to the 16" x 16" x 4" drawer. Then I got frustrated looking for the pliers I was looking for stacked on top of each other. I have been at this for many years (since I was 16 and I am now 56) so the transition and frustration has occurred over a long period of time. I am really glad I made this rack. Probably the best thing I have done for garage organization since I consolidated my 2 older Craftsman tool chest/cabinets into one larger "US General" (Harbor Freight) set that is also high quality and smoother than my older "glide" style Craftsman drawers. The amazing thing is I sold my 2 Craftsman cabinet sets for what I paid for the US General set on sale with 20% coupons. This was before my Harbor Freight store found out they are not allowed to use the 20% off coupons for tool storage (lucky me, it saved me $165 or so in addition to the sale price)
