I "scored" a 1947 Plomb 5449 recently but the cam selector is a bit worn- it shows slight slippage. It's not out yet but will be soon... And I don't want to be annoyed by it when I need (translation: Want to play with new toy) the ratchet for a very important job (Translation: Working on the '63 Chevy.)
I did some searching hoping to find JUST the cam. Since I only paid about $10 for the ratchet, I didn't want to sink a bunch of money into rebuilding it - it defeats the mental happiness of paying ten bucks for it.
I had gone through this with my Proto 5649, and was able to buy just the cam from Grainger. Checking Granger was fruitless for the 5449, however.
I stumbled across a thread on this board where a member had the same trouble- but he contacted the toolmaker "Urrea" that still makes the rebuild kit as their older model ratchet is 'based on the same design' (Translation: copied.)
I went to the Urrea website and the rebuild kit "5449RK" was bout $21.00. I was about to put in the order when that same nagging thought hit me... After shipping costs for both... $43 for the ratchet. Damnit this is annoying.
I started searching for other options... And I was surprised to learn that the freaking Home Depot sells that same Urrea kit for only $10.
I ordered it from their website and marked "Ship to store for pick up for free" and Boom Baby, $20 for the ratchet now, instead of $43.
Maybe this will help out others. They also sell the RK for the 5249.
