Hey Folks - Anyone ever see one of these? The handle reads Plomb 5469 - Los Angeles 5C. From what I can find, it appears to be from the early 30's. It is in perfect condition and quite interesting. What do you folks know about this tool?

I know they are handy on lug nuts or breaking loose and running off fasteners quick without changing tools.
That looks to be in real nice condition, especially for the age.

Those are not too common. I got one in january after three plus years of plomb collecting mine is not nearly that nice.
I have quite a few Plomb tools identified so far - I do snow removal in the winter and one of my customers gave me his dad's workshop in fall. His pop was a hoarder, of tools - 6k sq feet of floor to ceiling tools.. I died and went to heaven, until it decided to snow every day this winter! I will take a closer look and reference your list to see what I have. If you want the speed wrench, lmk - everything is for sale or trade. Make an offer!

Here's a post I made on another board about my track car build thread, very topical for this thread too!

...

How can there be any interesting tools for removing a wheel?

If I'm doing something boring like swapping winters onto the daily drivers, I just use an air impact or my corded Dewalt 1/2 drive impact, love that thing. But, if I'm wrenching for enjoyment I prefer to use hand tools only.

This is a rare one, its a Plomb 1/2 drive flex head speeder. Its thicker than a normal 1/2 drive speeder, and with the flex head you can first use it as a breaker bar to loosen the wheel lugs then turn it to use it as a speeder to get them off quickly. Based on the markings this one was made in 1942. Nobody really uses them anymore, impact guns pretty much killed them off as a tool. I think Snap-on still makes a version for field techs with no access to air or power, but they are really pricey. Sort of a neat piece of history and still as functional as the day it was made during WWII.

that is really cool. id love to be able to find one of those now i know they exist.

"I dont use speeders often, but when i do, im already half way done, and forgot i even have them"

example, a few weeks ago i was doing the transmission filter on my 94 blazer. it has about 25 13 or 15mm bolts holding the pan on. after getting about 8 of then started. Light bulb! got the speeder i have, and whizzed them right in. Perfect. something like that you wouldnt want to use an impact as the torque specs are only 13 INCH lbs.

the other day at sears i picked up a usa 1/4 speeder for $9. usually about $17. the reason i picked up a 1/4 is for interior work because its less bulky then my 3/8 speeder. almost picked up the 1/2 at a pawn shop but just figured if im already using something with the size of a speeder, i can just slap a 3/8 to 1/2 adapter.
