Intro:
I have started making a tool board for my 9/16" Y Series Socket Set. The 9/16" Y Series ran up until 1930ish when it was discontinued. This set is dated mid 20s as the sockets are stamped with a single numerical digit instead of having the Y in the part number. This is a complete No.99 socket set plus a few extras such as the ratchet which is a later production. There is a few other 9/16" items I am missing which will have placeholders.

I will post pics of the progress as the build continues.

Start of the build. A 24" X 24" sheet of wood. After doing some experiments with the hangers I decided to go with a 1/8" round stock. I cut each one to length and drilled and under sized pilot hole. I then proceeded to hammer them in like nails. So far so good. I had to stop as I need more supplies.IMG_20200605_205139542.jpegIMG_20200606_080646848.jpeg

I'm looking forward to watching this! I've got a prewar Craftsman tool board project in my future so I'm looking for ideas.

Thank you all.
I finish up the peg locations. The next step is going to take a while as I don't have a router but the plan is to taper the corners of the board and paint with an accent color. I also have to settle on a logo. The period correct is really Plain Jane that they used during this period for their boards. The black and silver steel tag shown. I am tempted to use the catalog logo from this area shown with the Plomb Bob. Any votes on logos?IMG_20200607_091947889.jpegScreenshot_20200607-092600.jpegScreenshot_20200607-092610.jpeg

I vote the black and silver steel tag looks best, it's period correct and the font has that wonderful solid no frills look to it, like the tools. Maybe enlarge it and put it above the tools?
The catalogue logo is brighter, but if you paint some colour accent on the board it won't need a colourful logo.

Made a little more progress. Designed up some name plates in solid works and found a piece of 12ga Aluminum drop. I forgot to design the nail holes[emoji21] so had to drill them that's why a few are a little off center. Next step is to work on the vinyl decals for nameplates. Going old school with the looks of this board.IMG_20200715_210217141.jpegIMG_20200715_210221850.jpegIMG_20200715_210225662.jpeg

Lord almighty you give yourself some tough tasks. It's like you are punishing yourself for sins of past lives or something....lol

Roy, did you leave a bucket of plomb to rust in the rain or something in your past life? Did you dump a complete set of Blackhawk and buy a nice new shiny set of cheap Chinese stuff?

Have all the tags put on. I have to move one but over all I am satisfied with it. Now just finish the decals.
In the spirits of keeping things vintage I used my OVB claw hammer and square which I think are close to period correct. Am I going too far?IMG_20200719_204704390.jpegIMG_20200719_204839512.jpeg

I missed this thread before somehow. I admire your material choices, Roy, from the round stock dark metal pegs to the dark metallic nameplates. It matches the crude, simple, early hand-forged look of the tools themselves.

Any votes on logos?
I like the one with the plumb bob. It's basically monochromatic, like the tools and the entire board, but visually, that early Plomb brand name, the plumb bob background, and that hint of subdued red will really punch the board up, subtly.

More progress and nearing finish. Thanks to a family member I have the vinyl and started on the metal tags. Turning out good. Very detailed work which is a weak point for me. Thank you all. It was a good learning experience all around. I love the way the vinyl on top of the sheet aluminum tags turned out.
