That tool was already a loss. So they werent going to pay an employee tons of time to do a "nice" grinding job. They sold it as a second for cheap just to recoup some of their money.

Very good post of your reject Plomb. I would have thought they would melt a defect down so they could reuse the steel and make a good one instead of letting one like this out.

Is that a factory second or a victim of the lawsuit between Plomb and Plumb? Plomb lost and had to remove their name from their products before changing the name to Proto.

Co-Pilot: i do like the way the Plvmb tools look and their quality it great. I'm still not sure of the history of the Plvmb and the story about the Plomb lawsuit. is there a thread on that someplace on GJ and do you know the link? or who sued who and did plvmb become proto and where did plomb end up?

i'm sure I've passed on the ground off name tools many times in the past thinking it was a damaged tool. just curious are they worth the same as Plvmb or less? are you positive the 2n is for a second and not an owner's mark?

i think i have a few of the ground off (lawsuit) ratchets that i'll try to find and post a few pictures of for your thread. also if these ground off tools are the same quality as Plvmb i guess I won't pass on them again.

Co-Pilot: thanks for the story. just to clarify Plvmb became Proto and were the ones having to remove their name on wrenches sold after the Plomb won the lawsuit. yes?

i'm going to do some more research on Plvmb at some point, but do you happen to know the year the lawsuit was settled and or maybe when Plvmb originally made tools and started their company?

I know this doesn't really pertain to the topic, but I found it interesting if you compare a 1st quality plomb tool to a 1st quality new era proto how much cleaner and crisper the forging and lines are on the plomb in comparison to the proto. The plomb makes the proto look like cheapie.
Both are model number 8161:

Rusty: that's what I've seen on a few of mine too. might also be because the amount of use since they are both not new wrenches. i still won't throw my Proto wrenches to the curb just like i'll keep my old Craftsman tools.
