I picked this up a few weeks ago and while I was cleaning it up I found it was a Plomb Los Angeles tool. I emailed the guy at the plomb collector site and he said that he had never actually seen one of them before and only seen it listed in a catalog. Does anyone here have one of these or have had one in the past? I don't really collect plomb but have had a few speeders in the past and have never seen one like this. Does anyone have any idea about when this was made? The information on the tool is 5469 Plomb Los Angeles 23 Patent No 1380643
It looks by just looking at the patent number it was filed in 1921 for a "Flex-head handle for wrench". I am guessing the small 23 means it was made in 1923?

That is a fantastic find. I have a later production 5469 and I love it, use it as a breaker bar then stand it up and speed off... All in one motion! I use it all the time. The fact that it has a part number would make me think it was later than 23, but with plomb, you never know... Especially since it is stamped with a 23.

I can't answer your question, but that is nice! It looks like you collect them now!
Haha nah the last thing I need is another brand to collect. I have been trying to gather up all of the plomb stuff I have for a while now and post it here for sale but have just been lazy. This will go in with all of that stuff when I eventually get around to it. It is neat though that this tool is so old but yet is as useable today as it was almost 90 years ago. I just wish it could tell its story.

That tool with that number would not be from 1923. More likely from the early 1930's. Very early tools had no number and tools from the late 1920's usually were prefixed with a letter. For example early sockets have a D or DD prefix depending on whether or not they are 6 or 12 point sockets. It was around 1932 when they changed their numbering system to all numbers.

Has is Plomb spelled on the tool ? Up to 1933 Plomb was spelled with a O in the name. After 1933 Plomb was spelled a triangle replacing the O in the name. Go to ALLOY ARTIFACTS web page for more history on the Plomb Tool Company.

It is spelled with a O. You can see it in the pictures posted above.

I'd love to find a Plomb like that. I do have a couple of the Snap-on ones.

Yea up until I found this one the only other ones like this I had seen were Snap On. Plomb appeared to be really ahead of its time on a bunch of tools.
